  • Teaching Children In The Garden

    Teaching Children In The Garden

It's in the garden, amid the blooms and thistles, the soil and the stony ground, the dead seeds and lush vegetation where the story of sin and forgiveness, the Fall and Redemption, and life as one who has been engrafted into Christ can be told with real-life illustrations like no other. How fascinating it is that the place our children love to play is the same ground that can be used for discipling their eternal souls!

"Do you see that clematis? That's such a pretty vine! Jesus said that He was the True Vine. Everyone who loves Jesus has to bear fruit just like those purple flowers. Otherwise the Lord will cut off the dead branches like Mommy does so the rest can grow better."

I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit. John 15:1-2

"These flowers are called a peonies. Sometimes flowers like to grow in fields of grass where the horses are, even though they'll get cut down when the farmer makes hay. If God even cares about clothing a field of grass with pretty flowers, then we certainly don't have to worry about where we will get our clothes because He cares for us even more!"
Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith? Matthew 6:30

"This pot is made out of clay. The person who made it is called a potter. The Bible says that God is the Potter and we are His clay. He made us and can do with us whatever He wants to do. That should make us very happy because God's plan for His people is perfect - much better than any sort of plan we could think of."

But now, O Lord, thou art our father; we are the clay, and thou our potter; and we all are the work of thy hand. Isaiah 64:8

"These pumpkin seeds are dead. They won't grow if we leave them on the driveway. But if we put them in the garden where the soil is really healthy, they will begin to grow and produce beautiful orange pumpkins! Our hearts have to be like the soil in the garden, ready to receive God's Word with joy and produce fruit. If are hearts are stony like the driveway, than we will fall away from the Lord when temptation comes."

But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it; yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended. But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. Matthew 13: 20, 21, 23

"What kind of plant is this? That's right, a tomato plant! How did you know? Because it has tomatoes! Jesus says of His people that by their fruits we will know them. The best way to tell if someone loves the Lord is if they want to do the things that please Him."

Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. Matthew 7:16, 17

"When we're sick, we don't need to buy our medicine from the store. God tells us that the fruit from the plants He made are for food and the leaves are for medicine!"

And by the river upon the bank thereof, on this side and on that side, shall grow all trees for meat, whose leaf shall not fade, neither shall the fruit thereof be consumed: it shall bring forth new fruit according to his months, because their waters they issued out of the sanctuary: and the fruit thereof shall be for meat, and the leaf thereof for medicine Ezekiel 47:12

The parallels here only scratch the surface. So much more could be said about Creation, the sin that enter the world by disobedience in Paradise, and what it means to be engrafted into Christ. Next time you're out pulling weeds, pause for a second and whisper these truths in to the eternal souls of your dirt-covered, sun kissed, wee ones.

    My Shabby Chic-n-Pink Guestroom

A few years ago I joined the site Rate My Space. There I shared many of the rooms in my home and met so many wonderful people! The other day I decided to take a trip down memory lane and read some of the lovely comments that had been left over the years, only to find that all my spaces had been deleted! I had the various spaces linked on my sidebar. Alas never to be found again. *sighs*
Soooo I'll be sharing my rooms here on my blog starting with my Shabby guestroom. It's encountered quite a few changes since the RMS days. Hopefully for the better?
This could take a wee while so you might want to get yourself a nice cup of tea or coffee... or even better wine *winks* and settle in for LOTS of pictures!
I'll be moving clockwise around the room so come on and follow me and I'll show ya around! *winks*
    This is the room overview...

Large white antique mirror for pretty primping...

This is the newest addition to my shabby room, a chippy old wicker bed corona (found last week at a yard sale for $10) I wanted to use this as a shelf for displaying some rose paintings. However it just wasn't strong enough so I had to make do for this photo-op *winks* Whatcha think? fine or flop?

    Close up.

This french floral sconce sits at the top of the mirror. I love its delicate beauty.

My lovely Marie dress form. One of my favorite things in the room!

    French armoire...

Filled with all kinds of linens and treasures...

Come a little closer and take a peeky poo...

    A favorite little french lamp.

The lady in green is the newest addition to my boudoir lady lamp collection.

    Isn't she sweet?!

In the corner lies a victorian tete a tete chaise that I won at an auction. Fell in LOVE! Had to have it! Despite its shabby condition *winks*

A little pause for a spot of tea...

Italian stacking tables in cream with dreamy florals...

And above is a shelf filled with my small Norah Wellings doll collection.

The little brown pixie is one of my favorites!

Who can resist a smile like this???! Their little faces make me happy each and every time I see them!

A shabby chippy garden goddess adorned with rosaries and rhinestones...

A vanity found at the local Goodwill.

This little celluloid box featuring a courting couple still has its original interior brush set on a bed of blue silk.

Above hangs a bronze cherub lamp...

    Frenchy bedside table.

    Bed corona.

Darling ballet pointe shoes... One pair signed... Against a background of vintage roses... I want more!!

Can you tell I LOVE roses?! *winks* Naw... to subtle for ya? LOL!

I wish I could've gotten a better shot of this 19th century Vinea hand colored aquatint, but the glass was too reflective so hopefully you'll get the gist?

It has lots of cavorting cherubs which I adore!!

A little shelf filled with some more of my boudoir ladies.

And we've come all the way around. I hope you enjoyed the tour of my shabby bedroom. It's my one room for over the top femininity! Have to consider the poor hubby in the rest of the house! *winks* So if you're a girl who loves things French foofy and poofy? You're welcome to come stay for a visit. I'd love to have you! Sorry boys I just couldn't do this to you! *winks* You might come away with tassels on your ears! LOL!

And as you leave the room this pretty french couple is waving goodbye! And wishing you a wonderful day! Please leave me a comment and I'll do the same. And come back for a visit anytime! Vanna

  • NEWS: Cathedral Village bits and bites

NEWS: Cathedral Village bits and bites

Two things of importance to report today. Actually, make that three.

1.) I am still on a carbohydrate high from all the perogies, rice, noodles, pasta, and dessert consumed during Mosaic this weekend. Hope that everyone indulged just as much as I did at this great annual event that showcases just how diverse our city is.

2.) A few weeks ago I posted a review of The Mercury Cafe. Since that time, a number of people have posted comments about the place. Last week, one reader alleged that the Mercury's burgers were not homemade, contrary to what it says on the Mercury's menu. Here's what she wrote:

    Anonymous said...

I was expecting a homemade hamburger when the menu stated all burgers were homemade. To my surprise (and disappointment), I watched the cook take a box of burgers out of the freezer and place them on the grill... there was nothing homemade about them. I will admit they were good burgers for storebought box burgers but definitely not homemade. :(
    May 26, 2010 9:37 PM

I was a bit shocked by this. I really believed the burger I ate was homemade -- both the look and taste of the burger did not seem like they came from Safeway across the street. Then again, you never really know unless you're in the kitchen standing next to the chef.
Today, I posted two more comments on this topic, presumably from employees at the Mercury. They said:

    Anonymous said...

Actually you couldn't be more wrong. The burgers are 100% home made and not store bought - NOR FROZEN. Not sure what you were smoking that day but you were hallucinating. If you are interested in our process of making the burgers talk to the owner next time you are in and he will be happy to show you.
    June 4, 2010 9:59 AM

    Dave said...

Don't post lies. All the burgers are home made!!! Have a look next time you are in.
    June 5, 2010 6:39 PM

I have to say, I'm willing to give Anonymous and Dave the benefit of the doubt. With that, I think this matter is settled. The Mercury's burgers are homemade. And they're good, too.
3.) The former Cafe Orange on Robinson Street has reinvented itself as Orange Izakaya (izakaya is Japanese for pub). While the doors have reopened, the place is back to serving coffee for the next couple of weeks until the new menu and lounge atmosphere are fully ready. Early reports are good.
This from my frien d LRadd on Twitter: " Cafe Orange has been majorly sexified -can't wait for the bar to open. For now having a coffee on the patio. If ur in the 'hood stop by."
And with that I'm off to enjoy this awesome sunny Sunday. Happy eating.

  • Flea Market Finds PourLa Dix-Huitième Semaine

Flea Market Finds PourLa Dix-Huitième Semaine

Hi ya peeps! It's time once again for Flea Market Finds!!!!
Actually I seriously wondered if I was going to have anything to share with ya this week. I wasn't in much of a shopping mood (Yes HE-double hockey sticks did possibly freeze over *winks*) but I did venture out to my local Goodwill and hit PAY DIRT!! Sometimes when it rains it pours... champagne! *winks*
Let me start with a story about my favorite find (and not a bargain) from ebay. A few years ago (2009) I spied this french mirrored plateau from the seller Nouveaurose and fell in love! Alas someone else was willing to spend more than I, and I missed out... *sniffle sniffle*

Weeeelll I was perusing ebay as I am wont to do occasionally *winks* when I ran across an almost identical plateau from the ebay seller flea hound who always has the most charming statuary for sale... but I digress...
I hit that "Buy It Now" button so fast my finger got whiplash lol! And now it's mine all mine!! Doing the Happy Dance!! La La La La La!!
What do you think? Doesn't it look almost identical to the white one from nouveaurose? Do you think I should paint mine too? I'm wondering if it would bring out more of the detail? A lovely thing to ponder...

Then (as if that wasn't fab enuff *winks*) there I was at the Goodwill scoping about, when across the room I spied out of the corner of my eye a large PAINTING, and I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the price... wait for it... $8.99!!! I've seen mediocre prints there that were priced higher than that! I had three ladies stop to ask me if they could look at it before I made it to the check out lol!

The lady featured in the painting pushing the baby had a slice in her poor head so somebody gave this up. YAY!!

    Isn't she pretty?

    And a darling puppy too!

Then I found some rosy linens for $3.99 ea. Left to right is Rachel Ashwell, a vintage duvet cover and two different Ralph Lauren rose patterned sheets, as well as a funny handmade victorian style doll for my etsy store.

These cute lucite earrings in pastel colors were $2.99.

And lastly this book titled "Angels In The Air" by Ania Molchlinska for $3.99. The angels easily pushout to form mobiles. If you love angels and cherubs this book is full of some beautiful ones. You can pick it up on Amazon for almost the same price I paid HERE.

    I HEART the Goodwill!!
That's all for this week. I hope you'll come back next week for more flea market finds. I'd love to hear from you! So please leave me a comment and I'll do the same. *winks* Vanna

  • Object Of My Obsession The Duchesse Brisée

Object Of My Obsession The Duchesse Brisée

I have longed and searched for the elusive duchesse brisée (Or broken Duchess) a type of French chair/chaise combination for years! There's just something so romantic and well... French that grabbed my heart and won't let go. I'm Duchesse obsessed!
What is it about this chaise divided into two or three parts that makes it sooooo much more expensive then almost any other type of chaise? And why do I always fall in love with the durned most expensive things?!! *winks* I keep hoping I'll somehow run into one at an auction or estate sale and nobody else will want it (Yeah I'm realistic like that!) so I'll be able to pick one up without selling a kidney or body organ of some sort lol!
Won't you come join me for a tour of some of my beautiful favorites?
    Translated from french:
    'a duchesse brisée'
the 'duchesse' was at first in three parts,
two 'gondola type' chairs of different depth and height,
combined seats end to end, with a 'labouret' between them.
still detachable to be used at two seats, with a footstool.
the later rococo merged these into a single piece,
    France, 1740 ca.

Hmmm I didn't know that center section was called a "labouret" Good to know huh?
OK lets start with one of my favorites. Isn't it gorgeous?! I don't even mind one bit that the silk is shredding on the end. It only adds to it's patina and charm.

This one is very Hollywood glam of the 1940's don'tcha think?

Or how about something in a two parter? I could curl up right there with a good book and visions (delusions) of french chateaux floating in my head. Couldn't you? *winks*

I adore this moth eaten looking green velvet!

Or perhaps something in Louis XVI cane? Just needs some pillows!

Or dreamy blue with squishy down cushions? *swoons*

Tattered from a chateaux?... Yes please!!

Or one that's cool in crewel? Perfect in this chinoiserie room.

Or how about one with a more closed back? And sooo pretty in pink too!

    I adore them all!
But until I find that needle in a haystack duchesse... Dare to dream and *fingers crossed* I'll just have to be happy with my french chaise (here draped in tambour lace) And continue to buy the occasional lottery ticket. *winks*

And my fauteuil with ottoman from craigslist.

Do you have a dream piece that you obsess over? One that's almost impossible to obtain? I'd love to hear from you! Please leave me a comment and I'll visit you and do the same *winks* Or perhaps you have a duchesse just layin' around that you want to be rid of? I'm your gal! Thanks for dreaming with me for a minute or two! Vanna

  • Teaching Children To Memorize Scripture | Part 1

It's a well known fact that a child's ability to remember things is second to none. The capacity to soak up their influences is the motivating factor behind our government's resolve to get them into the classroom at an increasingly young age. Once they're out from underneath their parent's control, the state has a no-holds-barred approach to indoctrinating our children with immorality and socialistic propaganda. This explains why the 4-year-olds in our province are going to school and being taught to question their gender, and why books like Heather has Two Mommies is perfectly acceptable story-time material.

It wouldn't be so bad if it was truth and righteousness our government was so concerned about instilling into our children. But then, if it was really God's Word the government looked to as their moral compass, they probably wouldn't be so quick to snatch the future of the nation away from their parents as soon as possible. Proverbs 22:6 was written to Dads and Moms; it is our duty to train up our children in the way that they should go, not the state's.

This reason, coupled with the desire to see our children's salvation and a life-time of blessing from the Lord, ought to make Scripture memorization and biblical instruction fundamental to the everyday life of a Christian family (Psalm 119: 9-11; Deuteronomy 6: 6,7; 1 Peter 3:15). If our children learn to abide by God's principles and commandments concerning marriage, economics, and life in general, they will become the leaders in a society that is craving for morality, prosperity, and stability.

What we think are the basics of life (i.e. arriving to a job on time and sober) are becoming extinct in a culture that's lost its way. This give a distinct advantage to the child who has learned to abide by God's formula for a happy and peaceful life:

"Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stand in the path of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful, but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in his law he meditates, day and night." Psalm 1:1,2"He who heeds the Word wisely will find good, and whoever trusts in the Lord, happy is he." Proverbs 16:20"... His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who has called us by glory and virtue, by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust." 2 Peter 1: 3,4If we want to give our children a good life, we must give them God's Word. It is the key to salvation and the pattern for success. No amount of toys, allowance money, clothes, or candy can produce righteousness or an outstanding member of society. We cannot save our children; that is an act of God's grace alone. But we can hide God's Word in their hearts and take comfort in knowing that it will never return to Him void (Isaiah 55:11).

  • Sofas I Dream Of...

    Sofas I Dream Of...

I could just cry. My newest post disappeared in all the blogger madness. Friday the 13th... go figure!! So for those that left me comments thank you! I really appreciated them. Did any of you lose posts also?
    Well here goes again...
I wanted to share some of my dream sofas with you. There are LOTS of pictures because I have LOTS of favorite sofas and these barely scratch the surface. Won't you join me for a minute (or ten *winks*) and dream along with me?
Warning in advance... I don't like much that's shiny bright. I really prefer a time worn well loved patina. So if modern and sleek is your thing? This isn't for you... Just sayin'
OK let me start with this piece of deliciousness! Part chaise part sofa. Can't you imagine this with some large down aubusson pillows? I think I could lounge here all day! Maybe I could get my hubby to feed me some grapes? LOL!

This is my own living room sofa and I really do love it. It has its original silk upholstery from the 1920's and the cushions are pure down. It looks great until you sit on it and then it looks a flat mess.

I'd trade it in a red hot minute for this one from Rubylane (11k on sale HERE) *gulps and *drools*... Not a pretty sight! LOL! Me not the sofa!

Or this wonderful corbeille style. Corbeille translates to basket in French.

    Isn't this one gorgeous?

This one has room for lots of friends!

I love the grand decay of this one

I really love high backed sofas and the enclosed safe feeling they provide. One of the sofa styles that lends itself to this wonderfully is the knole sofa or settee. The knole dates from 17th century England as is named for Knole House in Kent. It was originally used as a type of throne. Both the sides and back are equal in height and each end is tied on the top with ropes which fold down to create a lounge of sorts. Honestly I'm not sure what this is all about? But it is cool don'tcha think?

Many years ago I fell in love with the knole sofa in Rose Tarlow's living room. It had the perfect patina. Just the right amount of wear and tear and it didn't hurt that it was chinoiserie in style either *winks*

Weeeellll eventually Ms. Tarlow decided to let it go and it turned up on 1st dibbs. Alas it was not to be in my home because at 13k (If I remember correctly) it wasn't in my price point *sighs* Isn't it fab? Maybe a little too shabby for some, but I LOVE it!!

This one would make a nice alternative.

I love the antique 17th century tapestry on this one.

This is a set of knole sofas in Sidney Poitier's living room. Just gorgeous!

And this one in pink is adorable!

I finally managed after years of searching to find my own lil' pink knole sofa. It's from the 1920's and also has down filled cushions. I found it in a local antique store for $300. I'm thinking of adding some fringe to the bottom. Do you think I should? This one is a keeper!

Here's where it ties at the top.

And changing direction a little I'm also wild for french daybeds! Are you? I immediately fell in love with this smooshy wooshy perfect daybed that belongs to Joni's (Cote de Texas) sister in law's sister (Did you catch that? LOL!) I don't usually love blue but I'd redecorate my entire living room for this one!

    Love this Louis XVI style.

And this one. Those little bolster pillows make me weak in the knees every time!

And I also love this Louis XV style...

This is my own antique Louis XV daybed. I purchased it without really thinking about where it might go in my house? I had visions of lounging upon it in front of a sunny window with a good book. Usually this devil may care strategy works for me but not this time *sighs* There just isn't room (Or enough sunny windows!) So off to etsy it will go. An expensive mistake.

    Hand carved details.

I found this similar one in gray at the Paris Apartment Boutique that I love!

I'm also mad for the smaller corbeille settees! Each one wraps itself around you like a nice hug!

    Tatty but darling.

    Beautiful in aubusson.

    Lovely in salmon.

    Luscious in silk.

I'll just have to be happy for now with my little $60ish funky green velvet settee (in my home gym) from craigslist. At least until that money tree in my backyard starts to grow. *winks*

I'm also crazy for the English chesterfield. This one is my dream come true! Perfectly aged and worn leather from the 19th century.

And this one is mine. In this delusion *winks* I had an English library with a roaring fire and floor to ceiling leather books... But again in reality not the space *sighs* And the scale was all wrong for what I actually DO have. So off to craigslist it goes.

And yet another dream piece run amok. I love this french iron crib/daybed! Don't the textiles just make it in this shot?

And my own very similar iron daybed. I bought it as an outdoor sofa for my side deck but it really isn't sturdy enough for multiple people to sit on. Especially in my family where some people tend to be + sized *winks* So off to etsy it goes.

So some of the dream pieces I've managed to aquire turned out to be lifelong keepers and others not quite so dreamy after all. Have you experienced this? Longing for a certain piece for years and years only to find that the reality didn't meet your expectations? Or surpassed them? I'd love to hear your stories! Meanwhile I'm going to keep on dreaming... You never know what you'll find at the next garage sale *winks* Vanna

  • NEWS: More on Tangerine

I was really happy to hear that a new restaurant is coming to the downtown 'hood.
Tangerine by chef Aimee Schulhauser of Evolution Catering will be a welcome addition to the strip of shops on 14th Avenue next to Lorne Street (2234 14th Avenue, to be exact).
The restaurant will be open mainly during the daytime and into the early evening hours, with later hours a possibility once the restaurant has its feet under it (the same goes for a liquor licence). Schulhauser tells me that fresh garden vegetables from her grandma's garden will be front and centre this summer. She calls Tangerine's menu a "chef's playground" featuring a handful of semi-permanent sandwiches and salads, along with whatever else she creates on any given day.
Tangerine's website will be up and running in June. In the meantime, check out Schulhauser's other website: http://www.ecff.ca/

  • Sunday Favorites Chubby Cherub Knees

    Sunday Favorites Chubby Cherub Knees

I'm joining my dear friend Chari at Happy To Design again for her Sunday Favorites. This post is from December of 2010. It features one of my absolute favorite collections *winks* I hope you enjoy revisiting it.
Hello sweet peeps! I'd like to share one of my mostest favorite things... chubby cherubs! I just LOVE em soooo much!! (As you are about to witness) well... if you're brave that is lol! This collection snuck up on me as most of my collections have, and the next thing I know they've taken over my house! But I can't resist em! These ones shown are most of them in my bedroom... Yes there are more, but I realize I'm pushing the picture boundries as is *winks*

Please be warned there are a LOT of pictures here but the best one is the last one! So you might want to start there... just sayin'
I'm starting with this former base of what was probably a grand center piece bowl display consisting of three late 18th century german porcelain cuties. The bowl is long gone so I stuffed some old ostrich feathers in there. Truth be known it was my feather duster... but don't tell... shhhhhhhhhh!

This little trio is living in this spot temporarily. I need to find them a home that does them some justice but I'm out of space!! I've tried to tell the hubbs that we need a bigger house for more stuffity stuffs but he just won't cooperate *sighs* Difficult man!Lol!
Here's a 19th century spill vase featuring darling children. I love the worn patina.

This is a closeup on the base of an old clock that I purchased just for the cherub cuteness.

And here is one of my favorite cherub lamps. Also spelter, which sits on my small writing desk. Just look at those cute little dimpled leggies!!

Moving behind the desk you find this cute little guy. He's cavorting with some of his cherub buddies...

... And some old folks *winks*

Standing to the side is this little one. Chubby knees!! Chubby knees!!

Next to the bed is another spelter lamp. Do you see those little knees in the background?

On the other side of the bed is this sweet little cherub girl flower pot.

    With some friends.

    Working hard!

This chubby knee'd chap sits on a french gentlemens dresser.

A few sweet angel cherubs hanging out in my chinoiserie cabinet.

And lastly a sweet angel to watch over you. We can all use another one of those can't we? Didn't I tell ya this was the best one?

Are there any other cherub lovers out there? Do you need a 12 step program as badly as I do? Please share...
Update: I'd like to share the newest addition to my bedroom cherub collection, this antique nude print. Sorry about the reflection off the glass.

Thanks for stopping by! I hope you'll leave me a comment. I'd love to hear from you! And please check out the other wonderful Sunday Favorite posts.

  • Flea Market Finds Pour La Quinzième Semaine

Flea Market Finds Pour La Quinzième Semaine

Time once again for Flea Market Finds. Yippee Skippy!!
OK so it actually wasn't a very exciting week for the finds. I wish I had something fantabulous to share, but I'm going to have to settle for some "pretty good"
Also if you haven't entered my followers giveaway HERE there's still a week left. So leave me a comment and I might send ya some loot! *winks*

I'm going to start with one of my favorites for the week. A sweet cement angel for $23. The grotto was an earlier find for $65 (If I remember correctly?) at an antique store. And the rose sheet in the background is part of a full set for $3.99 at the Goodwill. It turned out to be a week for linens. It's funny how a different theme seems to appear each week.

Here's a grouping of some of the finds together. The two shabby chippy aqua column bases were $20 for the set. The glass table piece was a free dumpster pick up. Pink vintage tablecloth $3.99 at the Goodwill. Cement lady statue was an earlier find purchased from a friend for $25. The yellow and rose curtains that you see in the background will be going to my new (coming soon) etsy shop. Yes I too will be going the way of etsy. I'll give everybody a heads up when it's ready to go. I promise you my prices will be GOOD *winks*

Vintage garment bag also going to etsy.

As well as this cute cherub plaque.

This large antique ironstone pitcher was $4.99 at the Value Village. I don't think anybody wanted it because of its discoloration, but I'm going to try the oxy clean soak and see how well it lifts (update to come)

I searched all over the blogosphere for the answer to where I could find one of these wicker cloches? Only to find them at my local Tuesday Morning for $10... YAY!! and while I was there I picked up the cute bottle carrier for $25 as well.

This was my absolute favorite find for the week, an antique majolica flower pot featuring two of my favorite things... cherubs and flower swags for $10 at the Value Village.

Decoupage bottle for $1.99 at the VV. I'm pondering if I should keep it or not? Falls into the "cute but" category. Somebody sure did put a lot of work into this one!

Cute towel with crochet edging for 99 cents at the VV.

A darling rhinestone crown for $4 from a local antique shop. I've been having all sorts of fun trying it on all the different little heads around my house including my pomeranian Jewel... She was NOT amused! LOL!

And lastly this rose clock for $4.50 from a local antique shop.

That's all for this week. I hope you'll come back next week for more flea market finds. And if you've found some treasures yourself (or even if you haven't *winks*) please leave me a comment and I'll come running! *winks* I just love seeing all the other wonderful finds, treasure, and inspiration out there in blogland!
I'm off to play catch up on all the wonderful blog posts I've been missing in the past few days. I feel so behind! So I apologise if I haven't responded to your questions or comments. I'll be getting to them stat! Oh and Happy Cinco de Mayo!! Vanna

Sunday Favorites Some Days Are Diamonds Some Days Are Stones...

I'm joining my friend Chari once again for her Sunday Favorites This post is from January of 2009. I hope you'll enjoy revisiting it again.
My misery loves company post... The day before yesterday I was browsing through the listings on craigslist (y'all know how much I love it! *winks*) And I was finding little or nothing of interest when suddenly (doesn't it always go like that?) I opened up a picture and my heart stood still!! There was the most fabulous chandelier and it was only $150!!!!

(Please excuse the picture quality. I had to enlarge them from the small avatar size displayed on craigslist)

Here it is! Isn't it breathtaking?!! But wait!... It gets even better! Also available by the same seller was a set of sconces to match for $75!!... Oh my goodness *drippy drool*

Doesn't get much more frenchy fabulous than this! But I found even one more item that night that made my heart skip a beat...

A painting of cherubs!! And this is the best part... $50!! Well I wasted no time and contacted both sellers with my fingers crossed, I hoped fervently that I would hear back from them. The following morning I checked my email at about 10am. Well the gal with the painting responded only to tell me that she had to sell it or put the painting in storage by 10:30. I tried to call her and was only able to talk to her machine. So that FABU painting (so sooooo me!!) wasn't to be *sob sob sniffle sniffle* But I hadn't heard anything from the seller of the chandelier. I wasn't too surprised because I figured someone beat me to it. So deciding not to dwell on my losses *winks* hubby and I set out to do a little bargain shopping. I found a very cool and frenchy soup tureen at a local antique store as well as two transferware plates for $1 ea, also an iron urn (been seeing them on many of y'alls blogs and I love em!!) and a picture at the Goodwill for $5.99. So all in all not a bad haul. We arrived home and I went to catch up with some friends online when I noticed the seller of the chandelier and sconces had responded that he still had both, and could I come right away because several others were coming to look at them? This message had been left at 1:30 and it was now 4pm. I replied right away, but alas all was already sold!! I wanted to scream!! Cry!! Pull out some more of the little hair that I have! left! I know it's only stuff... But what stuff!! I was sooo sad!! Hubby said 'Don't worry, you'll find something else" I wanted to shoot him!! He could NOT relate to my pain at all! I tried to put it in terms that he could understand like "You just found the car of your dreams... One you've been looking for for years... and it's half price... but it's been sold right out from under you!!! He said "OK honey I get it... would you like to go get some ice cream at Cold Stone?"... What?... You dirty rotten... "Did you say Cold Stone?... Awwwww... now I know why I married that man!! *winks* He may not understand my pain every time, but he sure understands my sugar cravings!! Lol!! So alas those beauties were not to be mine... But these beauties were! I found them the other day at the Goodwill. They are the Thames River Scenes by Palissy. There are 21 pieces and they were $50. But what makes it sort of strange is that my new friend Sally over at Salmagundi found transferware in the same color on the same day also at the Goodwill!! What are the chances?... Pretty good I guess!Lol! *winks* Neither one of us can understand why anyone would give these babies up, but we're sure glad they did!!

Here are my new beauties, as well as my new white iron urn. Hmmmm I might just be able to participate in Tablescape Tuesday one of these days *winks*

And here's my ironstone frenchy soup tureen. I love the Chou Chou handles and top!

Isn't this a cool scene? The set had a soup tureen too!

As well as a small platter.

One of my dollar plates. Art nouveau in blue.

And another dollar plate in pink.

But I think this was an absolute steal!! I've been admiring everyone's nativity sets this Christmas and wishing I had one. Well this one was marked $5.99 at the Goodwill. I took it up to pay for it and the cashier told me all Christmas items had been marked down to 59 cents! So I got the whole kit-n-caboodle for 59 cents!! Oh happy day!! Thank you Jesus!!

Look at this cute little cow. Surely he alone is worth 59 cents *winks*

And y'all know how much I love my sheep! Almost as much as Debbie (Confessions Of A Plate Addict) loves her goats! Lol!

And last but not least this cute print of a french mirror. I think I'll be putting this up in my home gym. I hope y'all will come back for it's unveiling. It's been a long time coming. There always seems to be one more thing that I need to do kwim? Anyhoo did you share in my pain? Am I a big fat baby whiner? You betcha! *winks* Have you ever had a fabulous piece (or pieces) slip through your fingers? Did you try ice cream? Please share your stories! I really do think that if something is meant to be, it will BE. Don't you think so too?... But still... *winks*... Vanna
I hope you'll stop by Chari's place and check out the other Sunday favorites!

1777 New England Primer Cursive & Manuscript Printable Alphabet Sets $2.99 each
While preparing for our daughter's first official year of "school," I found myself searching for cursive worksheets and came up empty handed. I decided to create my own and since then, I’ve had dozens of requests from other Moms to compile them into a printable set. What follows is a set of the English alphabet in cursive, combined with rhymes for each letter from the 1777 New England Primer and plenty of dotted lines to aid in practice.

Our goal for our children from the beginning has been to stress the importance of character and personal salvation in their education. Hence, I’ve included 26 Scripture passages to correspond with each letter of the alphabet. These verses, combined with the biblical ditties from the 1777 Primer used by the Puritans help enforce the Gospel message in the tender hearts of our children while they learn to write. A: In Adam's Fall, we sinned all. B: Heaven to find, the Biblemind. C: Christ crucified, for sinners died. The first half of the book includes printables for individual uppercase and lowercase cursive letters. In the second half, the letters are attached to help teach the flowing pattern of cursive script. I recommend printing out the entire book and laminating the pages if you wish to reuse them with an erasable marker.

  • Flea Market Finds Pour La Semaine Quatorze

Flea Market Finds Pour La Semaine Quatorze

It's time once again for Flea Market Finds!! WHOOT WHOOT!! OK now that I've made some noise over pretty much nothing *winks* I have to say that the amazing finds were not to be found (by me) last week... but... I did find some pretty good scores IMHO. Those of y'all who've read my blog a little, know how much I LOVE LOVE LOVE busts!! I have a collection of marble ladies that I adore, and my madness for busts has worn off on some of my fellow blogging buddies. Weeeeellllll... they found themselves some wonderful frenchy girl busts and had me feeling a little green with envy! Like my friend Chari at Happy To Design HERE And my dear friend Gloria at Happy To Be HERE. So I was tickled PINK when I found this sweet french girl bust from a local antique store for $28!

Speaking of PINK... I liked her so much that I felt my french armoire in my shabby guestroom could use a little revamp, so I added some pink vintage barkcloth curtains on a tension rod and hung them in the background. Here's the before with a mirrored background. You can just spy a reflection of the bed.

    And here's the after

Not earth shattering to be sure. Pretty much the same stuff (with the addition of the new bust and one other cute little thang...

This darling vintage mannequin hand that I found for $11 at the Vintage Nest. I've been having all sorts of fun putting different jewelry and objects on it! It makes a perfect display from my minerva medallion.
Here's a close up on the middle shelf.

    And the top.

What do you think? Is it an improvement at all? The jury is still out for me, but I was too tired to redo the whole thing again so I'm gonna live with it and see how I feel about it later. *winks*
I also found this 1920's lace and silk dresser scarf for $8 and I'm currently using it on a vanity seat in my bedroom. Isn't it pretty?

Here's a shot of the entire gentlemens vanity.

I also found a set of taxidermy pheasants for $65 at a favorite antique store. They'll be flying to my hubbs man cave office *winks* but it was too dark in there for photos today. I loves me my taxidermy birds! You can see my post on my newest peacock HERE if you missed it.

And funny how when it rains it pours? I found this little faux pheasant at the Value Village for $1.99. Do you find yourself buying in groups of things? For some reason it seems to happen to me often. Now if I could only stumble upon a cache of 18th century french chairs for cheaps! *winks*

And my last find this vintage rose tablecloth from the Value Village for $1.49. It has some stains that I couldn't manage to remove, but that's OK, It'll make it easier to use, and I won't mind if somebody spills their red wine *winks*

Thanks for stopping by! I hope you'll leave me a comment and come back next week for more flea market finds. Vanna

  • Sunday Favorites... Hubby's Man Cave!

    Sunday Favorites... Hubby's Man Cave!

I was hoping to join my friend Chari once again for her Sunday Favorites, but she's taking time off to spend with her family for the next two weeks. Guess I missed that *winks* But here it goes anyway. This post was from December 12th 2008, the good ole Rate My Space Days where I met so many of my best blogger buddies. We shared our homes and some great times together. I hope you enjoy revisiting this post.

Pssssst!! Hey everybody! Would you like to follow me into the mysterious inner sanctum of my hubby?... The MANCAVE? I have to warn you that there will be nudity, taxidermy and danger! (yes I know it's already too late you see a bum shot!) Hence the "NEVER post on RMS! So if you find these things objectionable? Beter not look! Ok that said, this is the one room in our home that hubby got to decorate all by himself (Well the garage too, but since it's stacked to the ceiling with my stuff it doesn't count *winks*) He's at work right now so I thought I'd sneak y'all in for a sneaky peeky.

This is the front of the nekkid lady. She's lifesize and was once a lighting fixture(one of many) in a french art deco theatre. She is my hubbys pride and joy.

Haven't you heard that "every room needs a little leopard"? Well in hubbys case that equals... a little leopard! His name is Lawson and he's our literary leopard! He's resting on a marble commode that houses a refrigerator and stereo equipment. Making it possible for hubby to withdraw from the world (aka me!) for days at a time... OK I admit I'm exaggerating... but he has been know to dissapear for hours at a time!

What might a leopard boy be looking at? What else but GIRLS!!! Of course!... Silly men!!

This secretary was a craigslist find for $200 and houses hubbys computer. The top drawer opens, folds down and hides the keyboard.

Some of hubbys pretties... Hmmmmmm that doesn't sound very manly does it? Let me try again... Some of hubbys manly pretties! Lol!!

On the left side of the desk is a set of bookcases found at an auction for $95 for the pair!

I only included this shot to show y'all the corner cabinet. It's from Belgium and it's my favorite piece in the room *winks*

    Desk top

One of hubbys smaller nude pieces. This one is dated 1912 and was a giveaway piece from a poultry company! Hmmmmmm what a strange choice but...

Her leg comes off and becomes a letter opener. Sorry it looks kinda gruesome doesn't it?

This art nouveau clock was a gift from me.

    A few art deco girls.

This little bathing beauty is a bronze and rests on a note holder.

Another deco girl about to get her toes wet.

Crazy collecting runs in the family! Huby collects garbage trucks and Batman... Yep he's quirky too!

    Cozy reading chair.

Well that's the end of the tour. Lets quietly exit and he'll never know we were here... no tattling!
A year after these pictures were taken I convinced the seller of the first life size art deco lady to sell me his other one, and I gave it to my husband for his birthday. He was one happy camper! So I'm sharing an updated photo of his newer lady, as well as a picture of the two of them together... warning... there are lots of nudes here... just sayin...

    In the evening

Thanks for stopping by! I hope you'll stop by Chari's place two weeks from now *winks* and check out Sunday Favorites when it resumes.

  • Sunday Favorites A Little Shopping Adventure

Sunday Favorites A Little Shopping Adventure

I'm joining my friend Chari at Happy To Design once again for Sunday Favorites. This post is from Feb of 2009. I hope you enjoy revisiting this shopping trip with me.

My hubbs took me out for some Valentines shopping this year. He knows how to make me happy! It's been a little while since I've been able to get oot-n-aboot lol! And I thought I'd share my little adventure with y'all!

I had to start with a stop at one of my favorite sellers in one of my local antique malls. She always has such an interesting way of putting things together. Very textural... and well... ODD.

It's really difficult to see, I know, but there's a little taxidermy bird under the cloche wearing a little gold crown! My hand reached for it straight away... only to discover that it wasn't for sale! Dont'cha just hate when sellers do that?! And why do I always want (and seem to find) the only items that they DON'T want to sell?!!

Anyhoo doesn't this vignette just draw you in? Makes me want to buy one of everything! Course I feel that way a lot! Lol!

I also loved these stacked platforms, but why oh why are they soooo expensive? At $95 and $115 respectively.

And this display in the same booth makes me long for a simple french lunch of baguettes fresh butter and of course wine! How about you?

Isn't this old stove top interesting? It would make for some interesting yard art me thinks. But at $125 it's a bit pricey.

Y'all know I'm an odd duck. So what better Valentines gift than an ODD DUCK!! And look it's a delusional duck that thinks it's royal!... PERFECT!
He sure is ducky! And busy urn-ing a living! Lol! Hmmmm but again at $136 he's still a bit over budget... Durn it!

Maybe some cool giant concrete finials would be just the thing? I always love those. And at $32 and $28 I think I'm going to keep them on the short list...

But wait... what do I spy out of the corner of my eye? It's a victorian mirrored firescreen with hand painted flowers. It's $125 BUT there's 20% off. So a cool $100. More tempting for sure! But unfortunately I don't need another firescreen. Maybe I need to start looking for neato small things... yep that's the ticket!

So moving on to the next mall for smalls, I spotted this booth. And looky 15% off. Is your eye drawn to anything here? Can you guess knowing me as well as y'all do *winks* what I might be drawn to?

Did you guess this? I've been so drawn to these wonderful old pincushion ladies lately! And with the discount she's $23.80. She's not too large... I'm sure I could find room for her at my house... But my cousin D has a really similar one that she paid only $12 for. Do you ever find yourself saying no to something because you know someone else found one for less? So I'm probably gonna regret this but I'm walking away.

Then as I turned I spotted this. Hmmm couldn't this sweet little ladies frenchy style desk be a diamond in the rough? Can't you see it painted in cream with a luscious toile behind the chicken wire? And at slightly less than $120 with discount I might just have to go back for this little cutie! Maybe my hubby will FINALLY let me paint something! Lol!

Ok so what did I finally take home, you might ask? Or you might be so tired from eyestrain that you don't care... But I'm gonna show you anyway!! *winks* I took home this interesting little frenchy spelter girl thingy. I have no idea what she was once used for. Do you? Maybe an oil lamp base? Whatever the case may be, she works great as a candleholder or another home for one of my beloved moss balls *winks*

And I couldn't pass these up! Art nouveau bliss! Next week I'll be doing a giveaway for one of these cuties so please come back and see me!

Cherubs turned out to be my theme for the day. I found this sweet cherub compote/tazza at the Goodwill. My friend Chari from Happy To Design HERE has the most darling candelabra with this same cherub. So I'm thinkin' maybe I can make one too?

And just look at this cute little fella! He's working so hard on sharing good luck! Well I can NEVER have too much of that! So he HAD to come home with me!

I also spotted these pretty Dresden style candlesticks and my heart skipped a beat! They have the most beautiful pale mauvey pink roses! I'm addicted to roses... can you tell? Lol!

I also found two rolls of this cherub wallpaper. It reminds me of my dear friend Gloria/ Happy To Be's stairwell. It's featured in her pink Saturday post for Friday, November 21, 2008 HERE Isn't it gorgeous?!! And anytime I find anything that Gloria has... I'm doing GOOD!! She has the most fabulous antiques and taste!

I also brought home this victorian ewer. I loved the intricate metal work and time worn patina. Maybe I could send it to Jo-Ann Coletti and have her paint some of her beautiful roses on it? Doesn't she do beautiful work? here

Also at the Goodwill I found these two vintage petticoats as well as the champagne pink roses and queen anns lace. I love soft romantic ruffles!

And I thought this was such a cute find! (Also at the Goodwill) for $1.99! Some vintage embroidery that some talented person made into a pillow.

    Even the back is darling!

And here it is in its new home in my shabby chic bedroom.

This old fence piece would make a great door topper. Maybe painted white? It was only $2.

And I found an ugly ole lamp with a very cool marble base (IMHO) I took the lamp apart to use the base as a platform for something special...

    Maybe a french candelabra?

Naw.. I think I found the perfect piece! This little cherub compote looks just right!

And when I came home from my shopping adventure I found this little cutie waiting for me on my front porch from ebay.

As well as this darling set of 1920's/30's chalkware figures.

Well I hope you enjoyed my little shopping adventure. I'm very happy with my sweet finds. I couldn't love my Valentines gifts more if I picked em out myself! Hahaha!! *winks* Vanna
Please take a moment (If you've got one) and stop by Chari's place and check out some of the other Sunday Favorites. Thanks for stopping by!

  • Are you a stoner?...

    Are you a stoner?...

An IRON-stoner of course!! *winks* Happy April Fools Day!! Yes it's a little early I admit, but I won't be doing a post on April 1st so it's the best I could do.
This post is for my bestie girlfriend Gloria who asked me very nicely to share it with y'all. If you love tiques and a BIG laugh you're gonna LOVE her place!
Plus I was dyin' to join in over at Marty's tabletop party and I'm running out of table tops! So I'm sharing a before and after of my ironstone cupboard. Is the "after" an improvement? I think it looks a little better, but it still needs to be tweaked for sure.
    This is the before.

Do you see a common theme? Like pitchers coming out the wazoo? It's that wacky compulsion of mine to buy the same/or similar shape over and over! Now I have to say on my behalf that I never paid much for any of them. A dollar or two here or there. I'd pick them up whenever the price was right.

Here is my after. What do you think? Do you see the three large blue transferware platters? The three of them plus the soup tureen were $49 at the Goodwill... score!!

Here's my cupboard with the doors shut. I love this cupboard/cabinet, all the glass panes are arched/bubbled.

    Left side.

    And right...

    Bottom

    And top.

A few of my favorites. This shape in particular!

    And this one

Or some art deco... I love that!

    A favorite coffee pot.

    And gravy boat.

This one turned pink. Love that!

I found this large platter at the Value Village a couple of days ago for $1.99.

A favorite tureen from Wedgwood with rams heads handles.

And a frenchy one from Red Cliff.

Nothing too grand or special here, but ironstone has always "spoken" to me more than most fancy porcelain. I love that it was used, probably daily. So many meals from long ago. If only it could share the stories...
Well that's it for now. I hope you enjoyed my little collection! If you have any ironstone featured? Please come get me, I'd love to see it! Vanna

  • Sunday Favorites Craigslist Do You Love It?

Sunday Favorites Craigslist Do You Love It?

I'm joining my friend Chari for her Sunday Favorites.
This post was from December of 2008.
Please excuse the picture quality, the icon sized photos didn't enlarge well, but hopefully you'll be able to see what I'm talking about *winks*
I hope you enjoy revisiting this post.

As many of y'all know (and probably wish they didn't) I am a bargain lovin' crazy shoppin' fool!! I have champagne taste on a domestic beer budget (at best*winks*) So I LOVE to check out all the finds on craigslist! Do you do this too? Sometimes I find the most amazing things for cheaps! Unfortunately even "cheaps" is straining the budget lately! So I did some virtual shopping instead. Will you join me on a tour of my finds at craigslist? Most are still available and waiting to find a good home! And I'd LOVE to hear about your finds too!!

Well let me begin with these darling antique trophy cups. The tallest measures 11" and two of them are sterling silver! All five for only $50! Wouldn't they look wonderful gracing someones secretary, mantle, or bookshelf? Hmmm awfully tempting... but lets keep looking...

Lets see... how about a chandelier? I soooos love my blingys! And this one is only $50!... Nope probably better not... hubby is complaining about the six hanging in the garage... But they were such great deals!!! And they all have such sparkley warkley beauty! How could I possibly say no? Well... I'm going to be strong here. And y'all who know me already KNOW how hard it is for me to walk away from a crystal chandy at this price!*winks*

OK confession time! This next beauty is no longer on craigslist..and hasn't been for some time because it DID come home with me! The only thing harder for me to walk away from than a sparkley warkley chandelier, is a french armoire at a killer price! $300 was the asking price but simply for asking if that was his "friendliest price?" I got it for $250!! Yippee!! Oh happy happy day!! I had NO idea where I was going to use this baby, and briefly considered painting it... But hubby had a fit! What is it with men and painting wood? welll...

Hubby turned out to be right! And now it lives in my family room and houses all my TV stuffs. Here it is all cleaned up in its new home *winks*

Now this one is really tempting!... Needs some work! But ooohhh that faux marble! And it's antique and italian!! Like music to my ears! But wait it gets better!! It's $130 or best offer! I might just have to pick up the phone on this one!... OK after a careful consideration of 5 seconds, I'd better pass. I don't have room for one more armoire in my house unless I use it in that shabby white bedroom of mine... And then we're back to painting the furniture, and battles with hubby. Maybe someday he'll vacation without me and I can have my wicked way with an armoire heh heh heh!

Just check out those columns! Aren't they somethin' somethin'?

Now this is for all the shabby chic-ers! And yes I am a closet shabby chic-er... And I am tired of living in the closet! I long to do my entire house in this pale romantic dreamy style!! All that white beauty surrounding me in a veil of calm and tranquility! Until one of my furbabies decides to jump up and sleep on the slip covered sofy in my vision of white... probably with muddy feet. Hubby is also strangely hostile and resistant to this style... silly man! Anyhoo check out this SWEET!!!! bedroom set. It would be fabulous in a big or little girls room! At $750 for the set it's a little pricey but oh sooo charming! Don't you agree?

Close up on the hand painted florals

This is a double headboard but the owner said they used it on a queen. Hmm not so sure about that...

Dig this vanity! Helooo Mr owner man... give a deal to meeeeee!

Now getting hotter!! Y'all know I have a thang for french, frenchy, curvy, foofy things for cheaps! And this has everything in spades! And at only $200!! Where or where could I sneak this in so hubby won't divorce me?... Hmmmm might be worth it!... I'm just kidding honey (if you're reading this! Really, no foolin! Kiss kiss!) Wouldn't this work great for holding a TV? Or used in a bathroom to house a sink? Or... And this is the one I like best... To hold a whole collection of marble busts!!! Yeah baby! *winks*

How about a darling kidney beaner desk? This one is only $250 and has such great lines!

Now this is one that DID get away from me! I hesitated too long and didn't want to drive the 30 miles required to pick it up. When I checked a few days later... it was GONE! And it was only $15! What was I thinkin'?!! It's only an hour total for a fab birdcage!... Well I was too lazy... and that's the truff *sighs*

Threw this one in also for my shabby chic friends. Isn't the paint perfect on this charming little table? $65 is the asking price but I'm sure they could do a little better... *winks*

Or how about an older chocolate set? It comes with plates too! For $50 it could be yours!

Now these are also on my VERY short list!! There are a pair of these beautiful chairs for $250. They are soooo screaming my name! VANNA... take me home VANNA!! I have a thang for frenchy chairs as well! Don't ya think chairs have the most personality of any furniture pieces?

I am incredibly tempted by these! And sooo impressed with my AMAZING willpower!... ok and the fact that I have zero money... Haha!

And here's my finisher, a fabu ramous french settee! Yes it's just a tad costy ($395) But just look at those legs!! They could do pirouettes!! And in an entry hall wouldn't it look amazing!!... Crap-o-noodles! I don't have an entry hall! What a dream crusher!

Well that's all for now. I really enjoyed sharing this shopping experience with you! And so far today I haven't spent a dime! Hubby would be SOOOO PROUD!! But there's always tomorrow... *winks* Vanna
P.S. I'm still sad about missing out on those french chairs! Weren't they fabulous?!
Please stop by Chari's place and check out the many other Sunday Favorites!

Flea Market Finds Pour La Dixième Semaine

Won't you please entrer dans mon boudoir?

This is where my finds for this week begin. Could you come a little closer?

My finds start with rhinestones!! So glam-n-girly 1950's!

I found the telescoping cigarette holder in a thrift store for the non-thrift price of $40. Had to have it though because it matched so well with my other sparkly warkly finds *winks* The broach was $5 and the lipstick case was $12. (still had the coolest shade of red lipstick in it too!) The comb cover $14. And the Irice perfume bottle in the back for $4. Not the greatest prices maybe, but not too bad?

This rhinestone bracelet was $1 at the thrift.

This little tintype of a girl was $10. Isn't she cute?

Shown on Glory Isabella (yes I finally named her. Glory for my bestest blogging buddy Gloria! And Isabella was the favorite bloggers choice) is an old hat full of pale pink millinery flowers for $10. Necklace by cupids charm. She's making the handiest model!

They're very shabby chic dont'cha think?!

OK will you now please follow me into le salon?

Where I'd like to share with you this victorian wool jacket in quite amazing and wearable shape (If I were only small enough *winks*) for $25. I have a really beautiful victorian dress to go with it that I'll share at another time.
And I've saved what I consider the best for last...
This tapestry featuring a shepherd and his wife. I was told it's from the 1950's? I probably paid too much for it at $70, but finding anything remotely tapestry "like" around here isn't easy.

It's over 6.5' tall and 5' wide. It's a little bigger than shown because I wrapped it around my trumeau to share with you.

Lookie! Even the goats look happy!
However on a less happy note for moi..

and in the "misery loves company" category, I found my dream shabby fireplace surround... and it was already SOLD! I could've cried! This baby would've MADE my bedroom!

Just look at all that perfect shabby beau-tay!! *sniffle sniffle* I'm just a little bit sick about it. Oh well I guess it wasn't meant to be... Wanna join my pitty party? I'll bring the margaritas... As soon as I pull myself off the floor. Not that I'm not incredibly grateful for all the many lovely blessings I do have mind you *winks* I AM!

Well that's my finds for the week. Thank you for stopping by! I hope you'll come back next week for more flea market finds. I'll try not to be such a baby about things *winks* I hope you'll leave me a comment. I'd love to hear from you!

  • Teaching Reading and Writing in Minutes per Day

Teaching Reading and Writing in Minutes per Day

I have used the same tired, old, hand-me-down phonics curriculum for each one of my children. Remember those old infomercials about Hooked-on-Phonics from the early 90's? Yes, the same ones you now run across in the thrift stores for $2? That's what I use.

Just when I think I should really look into a new phonics curriculum with some bells and whistles (and pages that are actually still connected to the book. Ahem.), I remember how easy it has been to teach my first four children to read... and I squelch my curriculum addiction.

Reading I try to wait until I see some signs of reading readiness in the child, whether that be around age five or much later. Here are a few things I look for:

    • Ability to sit still for more than.2 seconds.
    • Interest: "What does that say, Mama?" "Is this how you make an 'S,' Mama?" (Writing readiness is so closely connected to reading readiness.)
    • An interest in listening to longer, more complicated books, especially with less pictures.
    • Pretending to read by looking at pictures for clues.

Once I see these signs I begin to work through our old phonics book, which begins with the sounds of the alphabet, followed by consonant blends, suffixes and prefixes, and finally vowel blends.

We work about 15 or 20 minutes per day, less if he is fidgety and more if he is interested and doing well. The important thing is consistency, not the amount of time spent.

I don't let him get too frustrated. Sometimes it's hard to know when to push, but usually kids are more successful when they gain confidence. I have even backed up in the phonics book before in order to help the child gain some confidence again if I see he's hit a road block.

Writing Some of my children are fantastic writers and some are more challenged by writing, but this method has proved to be a fit for everyone:

The child begins with copywork. There are many copywork books you can purchase, or you can just assign a copywork passage from something the child is reading. When the child is just beginning to write, he copies a short sentence. The most important thing to remember is to assign copywork from good literature.

As the child gets older he is gradually assigned more and more complicated passages to copy, and always from good literature.

Finally, somewhere around age 12 and beyond, the child is required to do dictations: Mom reads a passage to the child and he must write it. When he's finished, the dictation is checked for mistakes and corrected.

The point of copywork and dictation is not necessarily handwriting practice, but an exercise in learning good writing mechanics: grammar, spelling and punctuation. Ruth Beechick recommends copying the same passage each day for four days then using the same passage as a dictation exercise on the fifth day.

Narration Narration is merely "telling" what happened in a story. Even a three year old can do an informal narration of a story they've heard or an event that has happened to them. Narration is great for so many things; even just simple communication practice.

If children are required to tell back to you what they have read, they retain much more information than if they are merely answering "comprehension questions". Narration requires that more attention be paid to what the child is reading (or listening to). As the children get older, I require written narrations of material they are reading, be it fiction or non.

Narration helps me to know exactly what my child is understanding. Narration replaces lots of textbooks as well. We can invest instead in great literature and living books for them to narrate from!

I have discovered that teaching reading and writing to my children in this way has eliminated a lot of unnecessary stress in our homeschool , not to mention the cost of extra textbooks. This method has served us well--yep, even for those sometimes hard-to-teach- boys.

    Happy Homeschooling, Mama!
