Laughing All The Way | Merrily Homeschooling Through The Busiest Time Of The Year

Yesterday Iwoke up overwhelmed - never a good sign. My to-do list for the day was longer than my arm. I wanted to crawl back under the covers and hibernate until the middle of January until after the Christmas dust had settled.

The schedule for the day included attending our Ladies Christmas Tea at Church - something I look forward to every year. Something I was supposed to bring homemade goodies along to as a gift to our Senior members and shut-ins.

    I hadn't baked anything.

Also on the list was finishing an article for Free Homeschool Deals, picking up a car-seat swing for our new church, buying a birthday present for my brother, baking cookies for two separate exchanges, tackling seven loads of laundry, and replying to an overflowing inbox... after homeschooling and taking care of supper.

I wanted to cry. I felt stressed and irritable. When I'm stressed and irritable, I get snappy. I've learned that snapping at my kids doesn't make them work any faster or harder; it drags them down and puts a wedge in our relationship. Ain't Momma happy, ain't nobody happy.

I didn't want my kids to have another day with a snappy Mom. They had too many of those already this month. Something had to give, and I decided it wasn't going to be them. They had given me plenty of grace lately, more than I was worthy of.

    I cancelled everything.

I didn't go to the Ladies Tea. I emailed the hosts of the cookie exchanges I had committed to and apologized for over-committing myself; I just couldn't do it this year. I turned off the computer and refused to check my email until the kids were in bed. I closed the door to the laundry room and put the "out of sight, out of mind" rule to the test. Picking up the swing and buying the birthday present could wait until tomorrow.

I cleared the schedule. I had a day free of commitments; a day where I could enjoy my children all to myself and they could enjoy a happy Mommy whose focus was on them and not the things she had to prepare or the places she had to go.

I started the morning with devotions, something I had skipped for a few days because I was "too busy." Ironic and shameful isn't it? The Christmas Season was too busy for me to spend time with the Reason for the Season.

I found my place in 1 Corinthians.
"Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends... " 1 Corinthians 13: 4-8
"Oh, Lord," I prayed, "please help me to love the precious souls you've entrusted into our care with that kind of love today."

I woke up the kids by whispering "Mommy loves you! We're going to have a super fun day today!" They opened their eyes immediately and smiled. "We are? What are we going to do? Are we going somewhere?" "Nope. We're just going to stay home all day. Mommy's going to play with you, and read books, and we're going to have lots of fun doing school!"

"Okay! I'm excited about that, Mommy!" I didn't rush them to get dressed or scarf down their breakfast. There was no reason to hurry. They were in the best of moods and I found myself enjoying their chatter. How had I let those adorable giggles get on my nerves?

They laughed when I told them they could do three jumping jacks for every flashcard they got correct. They got more right then the day before when I told them how many they were getting wrong.

We baked cookies, seven dozen of them. I put away my perfectionist tendencies and let the kids help me roll the dough balls. They weren't uniform in size like they are when I roll them. There were small cookies, and big cookies; cookies that looked like snakes, and cookies that looked liked they were rolled by a two-year-old. They looked better than they ever had. Tasted better too.

We read books on the couch, one child leaning on my right shoulder, one child leaning on my left shoulder, and a baby on my lap trying to eat the pages. "Can we read another one?" they asked. "We like it when you read us books!"

They felt satisfied by the undivided attention and went off to play. I started tackling the mountain of dirty dishes in the sink and had the counters sparkling by dinner. We enjoyed the Cream of Broccoli Soup that the kids helped me make.

Not everything was picture perfect about our day. The potty-training child had more than one accident, the baby was teething, I burned the last batch of cookies, and the living room was far from spotless by the time Brad came home from work. Many times I had to remind myself, "love is patient and kind... love endures all things... "

But our day was happy, peaceful, and far more productive than I had imagined it would be. I enjoyed my kids and they enjoyed their Mom.

Quite possibly, I disappointed more than one person by cancelling all my plans, but I didn't disappoint our kids. You can't please everyone all the time; sometimes you have to pick and choose who gets your attention and who is going to feel slighted even if slight is never intended.

I'm no expert (as evidenced by the circumstances that led up to this day), but if you have to choose between your children or another thing, or place that needs your attention, choose the souls that have been entrusted to your care. Cookie exchanges and Christmas Teas are lovely but happy, peaceful children in a happy, peaceful home with a happy, peaceful mother are even lovelier.

If the busyness of the Christmas Season has you wound up tighter than an eight-day clock, consider making the following changes:

    • Just say "no." Practice with me, "Nooooooooo." That's it! You can also add "I've got too much on my plate right now," for clarification.
    • Ask your husband. This advice comes from my friend Stephanie at Who Can Stand. She says, "Andrew never minds if I want to "blame" him for having to turn something down. We got this wonderful idea from Gord and Paula, and it seems men are less likely to care what others think than we are. So if it is easier to say, "Oh, I just can't take that on - my husband thinks I've got too much already," then check with Brad and see if you can 'blame' him too!"
    • Spend time with the Christ of Christmas. You cannot survive without Him, but you can thrive within Him.
    • Subscribe to Homeschooling Enrichment. Seriously. I love curling up with this extraordinary Christian homeschooling magazine for inspiration and vision at the end of long days. It ignites the fire when it's almost out, helps me re-focus, and keep my priorities aligned as they should be (You can read more about why I love it here, or purchase it for 58% OFF the cover price here).
    • Clear your schedule. Wipe it clean. Commit to nothing but your kids. See if it's not the best day of the year, in their books and in yours.
    • Determine not to yell at your children to obey. Otherwise, you are actually training them not to obey until you shout. Call and instruct them in your regular voice. Correct them calmly, firmly, and consistently until they respond promptly to your first call.
    • Remember that a good education is life-integrated and not confined to a textbook. Make it fun! Reward correct answers with jumping jacks Count baking cookies as Home Ec. Sing carols around the neighborhood for Music. Read Luke 2 for Bible Time. Teach fractions with the clementines you're snacking on. Go tobogganing or skating for Phys Ed.
    • Take a break. Who says you can't?
    • Tell your kids you love them. It's hard to feel stressed or angry when you say those three uplifting words: "I love you."
What other homeschooling holiday stress-busting tips would you add to this list? I'd love to hear 'em!

  • Sunday Favorites A Little Shopping Adventure

Sunday Favorites A Little Shopping Adventure

I'm joining my friend Chari at Happy To Design once again for Sunday Favorites. This post is from Feb of 2009. I hope you enjoy revisiting this shopping trip with me.

My hubbs took me out for some Valentines shopping this year. He knows how to make me happy! It's been a little while since I've been able to get oot-n-aboot lol! And I thought I'd share my little adventure with y'all!

I had to start with a stop at one of my favorite sellers in one of my local antique malls. She always has such an interesting way of putting things together. Very textural... and well... ODD.

It's really difficult to see, I know, but there's a little taxidermy bird under the cloche wearing a little gold crown! My hand reached for it straight away... only to discover that it wasn't for sale! Dont'cha just hate when sellers do that?! And why do I always want (and seem to find) the only items that they DON'T want to sell?!!

Anyhoo doesn't this vignette just draw you in? Makes me want to buy one of everything! Course I feel that way a lot! Lol!

I also loved these stacked platforms, but why oh why are they soooo expensive? At $95 and $115 respectively.

And this display in the same booth makes me long for a simple french lunch of baguettes fresh butter and of course wine! How about you?

Isn't this old stove top interesting? It would make for some interesting yard art me thinks. But at $125 it's a bit pricey.

Y'all know I'm an odd duck. So what better Valentines gift than an ODD DUCK!! And look it's a delusional duck that thinks it's royal!... PERFECT!
He sure is ducky! And busy urn-ing a living! Lol! Hmmmm but again at $136 he's still a bit over budget... Durn it!

Maybe some cool giant concrete finials would be just the thing? I always love those. And at $32 and $28 I think I'm going to keep them on the short list...

But wait... what do I spy out of the corner of my eye? It's a victorian mirrored firescreen with hand painted flowers. It's $125 BUT there's 20% off. So a cool $100. More tempting for sure! But unfortunately I don't need another firescreen. Maybe I need to start looking for neato small things... yep that's the ticket!

So moving on to the next mall for smalls, I spotted this booth. And looky 15% off. Is your eye drawn to anything here? Can you guess knowing me as well as y'all do *winks* what I might be drawn to?

Did you guess this? I've been so drawn to these wonderful old pincushion ladies lately! And with the discount she's $23.80. She's not too large... I'm sure I could find room for her at my house... But my cousin D has a really similar one that she paid only $12 for. Do you ever find yourself saying no to something because you know someone else found one for less? So I'm probably gonna regret this but I'm walking away.

Then as I turned I spotted this. Hmmm couldn't this sweet little ladies frenchy style desk be a diamond in the rough? Can't you see it painted in cream with a luscious toile behind the chicken wire? And at slightly less than $120 with discount I might just have to go back for this little cutie! Maybe my hubby will FINALLY let me paint something! Lol!

Ok so what did I finally take home, you might ask? Or you might be so tired from eyestrain that you don't care... But I'm gonna show you anyway!! *winks* I took home this interesting little frenchy spelter girl thingy. I have no idea what she was once used for. Do you? Maybe an oil lamp base? Whatever the case may be, she works great as a candleholder or another home for one of my beloved moss balls *winks*

And I couldn't pass these up! Art nouveau bliss! Next week I'll be doing a giveaway for one of these cuties so please come back and see me!

Cherubs turned out to be my theme for the day. I found this sweet cherub compote/tazza at the Goodwill. My friend Chari from Happy To Design HERE has the most darling candelabra with this same cherub. So I'm thinkin' maybe I can make one too?

And just look at this cute little fella! He's working so hard on sharing good luck! Well I can NEVER have too much of that! So he HAD to come home with me!

I also spotted these pretty Dresden style candlesticks and my heart skipped a beat! They have the most beautiful pale mauvey pink roses! I'm addicted to roses... can you tell? Lol!

I also found two rolls of this cherub wallpaper. It reminds me of my dear friend Gloria/ Happy To Be's stairwell. It's featured in her pink Saturday post for Friday, November 21, 2008 HERE Isn't it gorgeous?!! And anytime I find anything that Gloria has... I'm doing GOOD!! She has the most fabulous antiques and taste!

I also brought home this victorian ewer. I loved the intricate metal work and time worn patina. Maybe I could send it to Jo-Ann Coletti and have her paint some of her beautiful roses on it? Doesn't she do beautiful work? here

Also at the Goodwill I found these two vintage petticoats as well as the champagne pink roses and queen anns lace. I love soft romantic ruffles!

And I thought this was such a cute find! (Also at the Goodwill) for $1.99! Some vintage embroidery that some talented person made into a pillow.

    Even the back is darling!

And here it is in its new home in my shabby chic bedroom.

This old fence piece would make a great door topper. Maybe painted white? It was only $2.

And I found an ugly ole lamp with a very cool marble base (IMHO) I took the lamp apart to use the base as a platform for something special...

    Maybe a french candelabra?

Naw.. I think I found the perfect piece! This little cherub compote looks just right!

And when I came home from my shopping adventure I found this little cutie waiting for me on my front porch from ebay.

As well as this darling set of 1920's/30's chalkware figures.

Well I hope you enjoyed my little shopping adventure. I'm very happy with my sweet finds. I couldn't love my Valentines gifts more if I picked em out myself! Hahaha!! *winks* Vanna
Please take a moment (If you've got one) and stop by Chari's place and check out some of the other Sunday Favorites. Thanks for stopping by!

  • Flea Market Finds Pour La Semaine Quanante-Six And A GIVEAWAY

Flea Market Finds Pour La Semaine Quanante-Six And A GIVEAWAY

Bonjour my friends!! I'm so happy you stopped by for another week of Flea Market Finds! This is a very special one for me because I found what has been a dream piece of mine for many many years...

But first let me start by announcing the winner of last weeks followers giveaway... It's... Danielle of Blessed Serendipity!! Yay!!

Danielle please email me with your shipping addy.

And this week is my last for my followers giveaways. My little way to say "THANK YOU" to all my followers for helping me reach 400+ friends! I can't tell you how much each and every one of you means to me!
In order to win this (my last) pressie you must BE a follower *winks* So if you aren't already, please join my followers list, and I'll be happy to follow you back too!
Please keep reading and you'll see what I've got saved for ya OK? *winks* I think this one is pretty good... just sayin'
Anyway the "dream piece" I'm all excited to share has been on my list of "wants" for what feels like forevah!
I've been going by a local antique mall and admiring it for over a year hoping the dealer would have a BIG sale. Alas they never did. Well... this last week I dropped by again to say hello and gently fondle *winks* the "dream piece" and the seller happened to be there. I told him how much I admired it and asked him if he could do any better on the price? He came down $50 (I wanted to cry) It wasn't nearly a big enough discount for my wallet. Then he started to tell me about its history... How he'd purchased it back in 1970 for what he was currently asking... How it had a double thick marble top that didn't slide... And telling me that as he'd housed it for 40+ yrs he'd like to at least break even.. etc etc... I told him I thought it was actually not too bad a price because I'd seen other sellers ask thousands, I just wasn't able to go that high. So he told me if I really wanted it and I was willing to buy it today, he'd take off $400... Seriously from $50 to $400?... I still wanted to cry, but now tears of joy!
What is all this emotion about? (You might be asking) And also "when is she gonna show the %($@ picture already!"
Well here IT is! It's a 19th century French patisserie table! Now mine mine mine! I'm happy dancing like nobodys business!!
I've been trying for days to take a pretty picture of it in some great light to do it justice, but it's been nothing but gloom and doom for the last two, so I'm going ahead and embracing the darkness *winks* Isn't it fabulous!? Do you see the frenchy beverage dispenser? That was a $19.99 find at the Value Village and the etched glasses were Goodwill finds for $2.99 each (I found 11) The silver tray was one of last weeks finds.

At this point I was thinking my week... Actually my year... couldn't get any better! When I spotted these two cuties at a local junk/antique store. I instantly fell in love with them although they were pretty costy and more than a little chipped and damaged. I was told by the seller that they're early 19th century Vieux Paris porcelain? Seems about right to me... Maybe one of my experts could verify? (That's you Richard *winks*)

I just love her sweet face!

And her basket of chippy roses.

The gentleman is supposed to be a gardener, but his shovel is gone, as is the handle and spout to his watering can...

And his head was badly glued on at one time. However for almost 200 yrs old they're looking pretty good don'tcha think? Just check out those dandy trousers *winks*

I scored a couple of cool frenchy grainsack style pillows from WUSLU. They're nice and large and were very reasonably priced. This was my second purchase there and I've been quite pleased. Have any of you purchased from them?..I like that shipping is always only $5... Oh and that I could order from the comfort of home in my jammies *winks*

Unfortunately these ones are sold out, but they do relist items from time to time when stock allows.

And for my final giveaway (At least till I reach 500 friends *winks*) I'm offering this Rosenthal Versace Medusa wine stopper. New in box. Just leave me a comment telling me you would like it to be yours.

It's burnt orange in color if you can't tell.

Even if you're not interested in the giveaway I'd still love to hear from YOU!
What would be a dream piece for you? And are you still doing the Happy Dance after finding one? (I still am!) I'd love to hear all about it!

Some Days Are Diamonds... Some Make You Want To Pull Your Hair Out!!

Well let me start on a very happy note. My good friend Ann at LIFEATANNSPLACE Has presented me with the special "Proximidade" award. This award is a fine one because it focuses not on the glory and fanfare of blogging, but in the PROXIMITY to one another through this on-line world (kind of a Six Degrees of Separation sort of thing)."Blogs who receive this award are 'exceedingly charming' say its authors. This blog invests and believes in the PROXIMITY-nearness in space, time and relationships. These kind bloggers aim to find and be friends. They are not interested in prizes or self-aggrandizement. Our hope is that when the ribbons of these prizes are cut, even more friendships are propagated. Please give more attention to these writers! Deliver this award to eight bloggers who must choose eight more and include this cleverly-written text into the body of their award." I am very honored Ann, and I would like to pass this award on to the following bloggers

    4 Linda at Royaltouch

5 Chrissy at The Apothacary Shop

    6 Kathy at Emptynester

7 Kristen at Something about nothin 8 Laurie at Decorating Fanatic Please stop by and say hello! They all have lovely blogs but they are even more importantly, lovely people. OK now on to my "misery loves company" portion of the post! The day before yesterday I was browsing through the listings on craigslist (y'all know how much I love it! *winks*) And I was finding little or nothing of interest when suddenly (doesn't it always go like that?) I opened up a picture and my heart stood still!! There was the most fabulous chandelier and it was only $150!!!!

Here it is! Isn't it breathtaking?!! But wait!... It gets even better! Also available by the same seller was a set of sconces to match for $75!!... Oh my goodness *drippy drool*

Doesn't get much more frenchy fabulous than this! But I found even one more item that night that made my heart skip a beat...

A painting of cherubs!! And this is the best part... $50!! Well I wasted no time and contacted both sellers with my fingers crossed, I hoped fervently that I would hear back from them. The following morning I checked my email at about 10am. Well the gal with the painting responded only to tell me that she had to sell it or put the painting in storage by 10:30. I tried to call her and was only able to talk to her machine. So that FABU painting (so sooooo me!!) wasn't to be *sob sob sniffle sniffle* But I hadn't heard anything from the seller of the chandelier. I wasn't too surprised because I figured someone beat me to it. So deciding not to dwell on my losses *winks* hubby and I set out to do a little bargain shopping. I found a very cool and frenchy soup tureen at a local antique store as well as two transferware plates for $1 ea, also an iron urn (been seeing them on many of y'all blogs and I love em!!) and a picture at the Goodwill for $5.99. So all in all not a bad haul. We arrived home and I went to catch up with some friends online when I noticed the seller of the chandelier and sconces had responded that he still had both, and could I come right away because several others were coming to look at them? This message had been left at 1:30 and it was now 4pm. I replied right away, but alas all was already sold!! I wanted to scream!! Cry!! Pull out some more of the little hair that I have! left! I know it's only stuff... But what stuff!! I was sooo sad!! Hubby said 'Don't worry, you'll find something else" I wanted to shoot him!! He could NOT relate to my pain at all! I tried to put it in terms that he could understand like "You just found the car of your dreams... One you've been looking for for years... and it's half price... but it's been sold right out from under you!!! He said "OK honey I get it... would you like to go get some ice cream at cold stone?"... What?... You dirty rotten... "Did you say Cold Stone?... Awwwww... now I know why I married that man!! *winks* He may not understand my pain every time, but he sure understands my sugar cravings!! Lol!! So alas the beauties were not to be mine... But these beauties were! I found them the other day at the Goodwill. They are the Thames River Scenes by Palissy. There are 21 pieces and they were $50. But what makes it sort of strange is that my new friend Sally over at Salmagundi found transferware in the same color on the same day also at the Goodwill!! What are the chances?... Pretty good I guess!Lol! *winks* Neither one of us can understand why anyone would give these babies up, but we're sure glad they did!!

Here are my new beauties, as well as my new white iron urn. Hmmmm I might just be able to participate in Tablescape Tuesday one of these days *winks*

And here's my ironstone frenchy soup tureen. I love the Chou Chou handles and top!

Isn't this a cool scene? The set had a soup tureen too!

As well as a small platter.

One of my dollar plates. Art nouveau in blue.

And another dollar plate in pink.

But I think this was an absolute steal!! I've been admiring every ones nativity sets this Christmas and wishing I had one. Well this one was marked $5.99 at the Goodwill. I took it up to pay for it and the cashier told me all Christmas items had been marked down to 59 cents! So I got the whole kit-n-caboodle for 59 cents!! Oh happy day!! Thank you Jesus!!

Look at this cute little cow. Surely he alone is worth 59 cents *winks*

And y'all know how much I love my sheep! Almost as much as Debbie loves her goats! Lol!

And last but not least this cute print of a french mirror. I think I'll be putting this up in my home gym. I hope y'all will come back for it's unveiling. It's been a long time coming. There always seems to be one more thing that I need to do kwim? Anyhoo did you share in my pain? Have you ever had a fabulous piece (or pieces) slip through your fingers? Did you try ice cream? Please share your stories! I really do think that if something is meant to be, it will BE. Don't you think so too?... But still... *winks*... Vanna

  • Flea Market Finds Pour La Semaine Vingt-Trois

Flea Market Finds Pour La Semaine Vingt-Trois

Chicka boom!! Chicka now now!! *winks*
It's time once again for Flea... Market... Finds!!
And what a wonderful week it was! The sun was finally shining here in the Pacific Northwest (YIPPEE!!) and I and the hubster headed back to Centralia Washington for another round-O-fun tiquercising! No sooner had I entered my favorite antique store when there... across a crowded room... our eyes met... And it was LOVE!!!... I gasped... I sighed... I gazed in awe... I hauled bootay to the counter faster than you can say "where'd she go?" And asked for a discount *winks*... And when all the smoke cleared she was mine!!! Oh happy day!! "What is all this excitement about" you might be asking?...
    Weeelllllll I'll show ya!!

My theme for the week was "beautiful maidens" Some of you might already know how much I love classic nudes. And isn't she is a beaut??!! She started her life at the end of the 19th century as a base for a compote bowl/centerpiece but somewhere along the line her bowl must've broken. No problem for me. I'm using her as a stand for a favorite hat. *winks*

Holding the sweetest little porcelain rose...

Covered in gobs of roses! She's a keeper!

If I hadn't found another thing I would've been Happy Dancing!... but wait... there's more! On the way home from Centralia we stopped off at a garage sale and I found this amazing book for $10. It's large 21"x16" and covered in silk featuring another beautiful maiden! (Yay!) Alas the cover had fallen off but it's still lovely.

It's titled "Picturesque California" (She's kinda picturesque don'tcha think? *winks*) I think it was a custom made book because there's no author listed. All the engravings and photogravures have been pasted in and there are lots of them! Here is the first page...

The waterfall on the bottom left is Snoqualmie falls which isn't far from my place.

And in the "third one's the charm" category this darling 1930's petite Marie Antoinette ($30) came in the mail from Romantic Rose Creations and will join my collection of boudoir dolls HERE

She's even wearing a little pink tricorn.

and little shoes in the palest pink. Just precious!!

I also found this pink floral chocolate set in Centralia for $30 marked "hand painted nippon"... Turns out it's fake but at least it's pretty *sighs* Live and learn I guess.

    Pot

Close up on one of the cups.

This little boot was $3.99 at the Value Village.

And I picked up this cute little angel planter for etsy.

A beautiful crystal grouping to use for display ($13) I AM a CRYSTAL-O-HOLIC!! Can't resist em! Preferably 18th or 19th century rock crystal candelabras and chandeliers! Yeah baby!*winks* If you've got any to spare?? Think of me ok?

A set of Hartmann hardside suitcases for $60. These have some wear and tear but the retail on these three suitcases at Hartmann is $3,435.00... so not too bad huh? *winks*

And the interiors are in toile!! Parfait!

This little watercolor painting of an English cottage was a Goodwill find for a song.

That was it for the things that came home with me. I had a few maybes to share. This cute little deco boudoir lamp for $40.

I've looked at these plates several times but at $20 each I passed. Aren't they gorgeous?

This cement maiden was fab but at more than $300 I had to pass.

And this one I probably should've brought home! A cutie frenchy louis XVI style chair with down cushion... newly upholstered for $60. If I had any talent as a painter I would've scooped this baby up! Wouldn't it look great in french gray or gilded? So helloooo Sares! This would be perfect for you!!*winks*
Update: Sares did give the chair a new home!... HERS!! I'm so happy for them both *winks*

Well that concludes my finds for this week. How'd I do? I'd love to see what y'all found on your adventures.*winks* I hope you'll come back next week for more flea market finds. Please leave me a comment and I'll do the same for you. I LOVE hearing from you!! Vanna

  • When you feel like you're way behind on everything

When you feel like you're way behind on everything

Carrying Anna outside to pick some beans from our garden for supper, I sighed.

The patio was more green than grey with all the weeds coming up through the cracks. The hose lay in a tangled mess off to the side and toys from the sandbox littered the yard. The flower beds looked like they were in need of a good drink and weeds had begun to crowd out the herbs I had planted in the vegetable garden.

The kiddie pool in serious need of a good cleaning, and our weedy patio. The lawn showed serious signs of neglect too. Not having been cut in two weeks, the grass had reached that unpleasant length where your ankles get tickled by the blades and bit by mosquitoes that had found a home near the roots.

I picked a bowl full of beans and returned to the house. Weeds were poking through the pavement in the driveway too. I opened the door and felt a hot tear trickle down my cheek. I quickly brushed it away. The kids were laughing hysterically together and I didn't want to rain on their parade.

Charity's dolls from Aunt Connie, all swaddled up and sleeping on the couch. Notice the pillows so they don't roll off? Toys strewn all over the living room showed signs of active imaginations and serious creativity. I like to have things neat and tidy for my dear husband when he gets home from work, but that clearly wasn't going to happen this day..not if I was going to have a nice dinner ready and Anna fed by the time he walked in the door too.

I felt deflated, hypocritical, and way behind on everything. I write about the joys of motherhood and being a homemaker, but today I just wasn't feeling it as I stared a sink full of unwashed dishes, enough food underneath the table to add an egg and make a casserole, and a long to-do list of things that still needed to be done: laundry, bath the kids, make supper, clean out the van, etc., etc.

It's not that my husband doesn't pitch in. He does, more than any other husband I know. He works hard all day and then comes home is a SuperDad to our kids and a loving husband to me. He washes, dries, and puts away the dishes after dinner, gives the kids piggy-back rides around the house while they shriek with delight, brushes their teeth, reads them stories before bed, and tucks them in at night. Then he pays our bills, runs errands I didn't get to during the day, and often brings me back a little surprise like Reese's or ice cream. He's a champion in every way so this feeling of "way behindishness" I get doesn't come from him.

Our tiny kitchen, looking well-used. :-) The unreasonable standard I had set for myself was self-imposed and largely influenced by staged photos on Pinterest and the comparison game I played with other homemakers. No one was telling me I had to serve gourmet meals every night, keep a spotless, well-organized home, and dress my children in trendy clothes that matched. But somehow I had gotten the idea that doing all these things would mean I was being successful in my role as a wife, mother, and homemaker.

Brad walked in the door and I didn't greet him like I normally do. I knew I'd probably have a melt down so I kept washing dishes. Silly of me really, because he knows his wife well and immediately knew something was up. He kissed my on my cheek and asked, "Hi Sweetheart. How was your day?"

I lost it. His kind gesture was no match for the frustrations I had pent up inside and the tears started flowing while I rattled off my list of failures. "I didn't get anything done today. The grass still needs to be cut, supper's not ready and we've already had cereal or take-out twice this week, Anna needs to be fed again, Charity's out of clean underwear, and I can't remember the last time I gave the kids a proper bath!" For emphasis, I added, "I just can't do it any more. Sometimes I think I'd just be better off at work."

Brad knew I didn't mean that. He put his hands on my waist and looked me in the eye. "The reason you feel like you didn't get anything done today, is because you were busy doing more important things." He glanced over at our three busy kids and continued. "I don't care if we have to eat take-out every night, or use paper plates for a while, or if the wash doesn't get folded. If you get nothing done all day but the kids are happy, then I'm happy too!"

I thought back on our day. It started with me crawling into Charity's bed for our morning snuggle. She told me all about how her stuffed animals had behaved at night. Judah had peed through his diaper, so I washed him up before breakfast and started a load of laundry. We had our usual smoothies, read the story of Jonah for devotions, and prayed that God would keep Daddy safe at Opa's shop and give us clean hearts that love Him above all and our neighbors as ourselves.

Judah's raspberries. Then I read Charity a chapter from Little House in the Big Woods while I nursed Anna. Judah can't sit that long, so he played "excavators" on the coffee table. After making sure everyone had gone to the bathroom, and the diaper bag was packed, we went to my aunt's farm to pick raspberries.

"See Mom? If you just squish them like this, then we don't have to make jam when we get home!"

"I'm picking all the tiny little hard ones 'cause they're SOOOO cute!"

"Look, Mom! I picked all the white ones! We can just pick off the green prickles after."

Anna had decided she was finished before we started, so I discovered how fast I can pick with one hand while rocking a screaming baby: 2 quarts in half an hour.

We made it home in time for lunch. I had some leftover chocolate drizzle from a cheesecake so I made happy faces on their peanut-butter sandwiches. They were over the moon with delight.

After nap-time, we took a walk across the road to the park and cooled off for a few minutes at the splash pad. Back home, Charity wanted to do "school," so she found her books and pencils and I showed her how to make the number three. "Around a tree and around a tree. This is how to make a three!" we sang together.

Throughout the day there were squabbles to break up, attitudes to adjust, meltdowns to clean up, time-outs for tempers, kisses for boo-boos, apologies given and accepted, and hugs for the emotionally distraught.

Brad was right. I may not have gotten much done by way of housework, but alongside me had been three little sidekicks whose minds and hearts, for better or for worse, were being shaped, molded, and influenced by their Mom.

The weight of my responsibility struck me. I wasn't raising children here, I was raising adults. I was forming the next generation of fathers and mothers. I was shaping the characters of those who would raise our grandchildren. There was so much I needed to teach them, so much discipling that needed to happen in their tender hearts as well as mine.

The laundry, dirty house, and weeds in the patio will still be there one day when I have time to play catch up. But I'll never be able to play catch up with my kids. My time with them is slipping away like hourglass sand and I can't stop it.

So, while I'd like to maintain an immaculate house, keep our patio weed-free, and cut out the take-out, I've only got one chance at this Mom thing. Charity is three years old - almost four. If she marries at the same age I did, I have just 14 short years left before she leaves the nest. The first three have come and gone in a blink of an eye. Five more blinks and it's over.
"And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up." Deuteronomy 6:7 Truth is, if you're way behind on everything except time spent with your kids, you're way ahead.

  • A Tale of Shame, Hope and Shabby Chic Bathroom Remodeling...

A Tale of Shame, Hope and Shabby Chic Bathroom Remodeling...

    I have a secret...

And it's a dirty little one...

I have been living in shame for some time with something I dared not mention...

For fear of being shunned and the subsequent social isolation...

But it's time to come out of the closet with my pain...

Please don't judge me too harshly...

I really need your support in this desperately embarrassing time...

I... have lived with... *gulps* Please be gentle...

    Carpet in the BATHROOM!!

    There I said it...

And not for a short time either... I'm sorry to say. Yes I've been living with the dreaded toilet rug *shudders* At least it's just my "crap"... pun intended.

Please don't think I'm trying to make light of people who are really suffering. Prayers being sent to all those in real need. I'm very very blessed to have a roof over my head and enough (Way too much) food to eat... and I know it...
And this bathroom in question is all my own so I'm the only one who had to know...
But whenever people come over and ask for the house tour I DE-tour them away from my bathroom.
Only a man who had never cleaned a toilet in his life would put CARPET in a dang bathroom! What was he thinkin'??!!

Well I've had a few bloggers ask me if I was ever going to put up any pictures of my bathroom? (You know who you are)
So now I have... Don't say I didn't warn ya!

If you are living in bathroom carpet shame (Or ever have) please let me know I am not alone.

So the little thing that I've been working on for the last couple of weeks was my mini bathroom remodel... I know it was way beyond high time!

After all this waiting I hope you weren't expecting something fabulous?
Sorry it's pretty minimal. And when it comes to DIY? It's DN'T for me as in DON'T! There isn't any granite or inlaid marble or pretty much anything that costs much of anything. In fact the whole shebang was under $200... But the carpet is GONE!! Oh HAPPY DAY!!! Thank you Jesus!! God bless sub floor!! Because even that was an improvement! *winks* I just shopped around my house for little this's and thats so you'll recognize quite a few of my recent flea market finds.

I re-purposed this little guy from my Living room. He's parked on the reproduction Victorian fern stand I found for $9.99 at the Value Village.

Are you ready for the befores?
I'm cringing as I write this...
I think our builder must have gotten the "super deal" on a gazillion yards of beige carpet.
I suppose I should be happy it's not in the kitchen...

    Builders grade and blah...

    In process...

And here is the AFTER... Sorry you're going to see lots of shots of this chair because this room isn't very big and I LOVE this chair!! *winks* The floor is done in Traffic Master Allure flooring from the Home Depot in Country Pine. It's vinyl flooring that has a 25 year warranty and is totally waterproof AND REALLY AFFORDABLE!!... But the best part of all is that even I could put in this floor (And I did) This is THE easiest floor to put down in the history of the world!..OK I do tend to exaggerate, but it was really simple and foolproof! It's so soooo much better in here!

Then I Annie Sloan'd the joint in old white. I couldn't just start my first AS project small and easy... Oh NO! I went the BIG kahuna! Lol! I'm still working with it.. and it's still a work in progress. I'm waiting for new faucets to arrive. They sent me high pro glow silver ones instead of bronze. So I'm stuck with the Miami Vice (Deco wannabes) for the short term. I'll share my new ones as soon as they're in. Sorry about the dark pics. It's raining again here in the Pacific Northwest... That never happens... says no one who's lived here EVER!

We didn't want to put major money (Or any actually truth be told, just sayin') into this remodel because this house is destined to be a rental in the next couple of years. So simple clean and user friendly was the ticket.

This French chair is one of my favorites despite it not being terribly special and the silk is rotting and falling off... The arm rests are gone. I still love it! It's truly shabby chic! *winks* I'm just glad this bathroom is actually big enough for a chair...

Much better... but it still really needed some drama and a "wow" factor... Sooooo I purchased two of the most beautiful shower curtains EVER from the Victorian Trading Co. HERE And I asked my sweet Mother in law if she would sew the two panels together top to bottom? I thought this would be a nice simple task... Alas it was not! My poor MIL worked on them for two days! And she's a very talented seamstress! She's also a perfectionist and the grommets at the top of one curtain had to be eliminated. Not simple at all as it turns out... However she did a beautiful job!

So now I had my gorgeous 12' shower curtain drape and I was all ready to attach it to the ceiling. (Cuz I'm a blonde) I didn't even think about the issue with the varied ceiling height. Or the fact that the ceiling is 14' high and the shower curtain 12'... Sometimes I really wonder about myself *sighs* How to put the curtain up and keep the ruffle lines straight and have a nice little drop on the floor? The hubster pondered a few minutes and then went out to the garage and found some chain, hung it at varying heights and VOILA! Now my curtain droops and drapes just right!

This shot is to give you an indication of the ceiling height. This bathroom may not be very big but it does have a lot of vertical space.

    The chain gang solution *winks*

I found a home for one of my large plaster urns ($15) Still doing the happy dance over these babies!

On top of this towel cupboard

I moved this pretty portrait from the gym to here in the bathroom.

My little bombe cabinet is looking so much prettier now!

I found this architectural piece on ebay for $28 with shipping and I mitered and painted it to create this window valance. The Austrian drapes were $4.99 for three and the Austrian valance was $2.99 at the Value Village. The lidded blue urns are Dresden. The ribbon barometer is antique and German. The candle chandelier was $75 at a local auction.

This cute little chubby cherub made of marble dust was a find at a local antique store. And if there's a cherub in sight I'll put a crown on it!... Actually pretty much anything that stands still! Lol!

The two gold framed prints came from the Goodwill for $3.99 each. The sconces were an ebay find from years ago. They actually have holes for crystals, but when I added them it was just too much... You'll probably never hear those words from me again!

A close up on one of the Dresden urns with hand painted courting couples.

The water closet has a matching sconce to the one over the tub. The nekkid lady with cherubs print was a find from an antique show years ago.

Maidens and cherubs get me every time!

I put this plateau mirror in here from the bedroom to hold my perfume bottles.

And that's all for the bathroom tour!... Are you still speaking to me after my revelation? What took so long you might be asking?... I don't know. I really wish I had done all this years ago, and more recently the toilet broke when my hubbs was tightening it down so I had to wait for a new bowl... The (aforementioned) faucets came in the wrong finish. The shower curtain took longer than expected. The cabinets needed (and still do) what seemed like a bazillion coats of paint... But all said, I like it all so much better! It's starting to feel like my own little escape from the world *winks*
So if you'll just follow me out through the bedroom I'll make us a nice hot cuppa in the kitchen (No carpet there ever I promise *winks*)... I've got freshly baked banana bread too... (Whole wheat with egg beaters so you can indulge in an extra piece *winks*) and you can tell me what you think? And what you would change?

I hope you'll stop by next week for more flew market finds. I LOVE to hear from you!

1777 New England Primer Cursive & Manuscript Printable Alphabet Sets $2.99 each
While preparing for our daughter's first official year of "school," I found myself searching for cursive worksheets and came up empty handed. I decided to create my own and since then, I’ve had dozens of requests from other Moms to compile them into a printable set. What follows is a set of the English alphabet in cursive, combined with rhymes for each letter from the 1777 New England Primer and plenty of dotted lines to aid in practice.

Our goal for our children from the beginning has been to stress the importance of character and personal salvation in their education. Hence, I’ve included 26 Scripture passages to correspond with each letter of the alphabet. These verses, combined with the biblical ditties from the 1777 Primer used by the Puritans help enforce the Gospel message in the tender hearts of our children while they learn to write. A: In Adam's Fall, we sinned all. B: Heaven to find, the Biblemind. C: Christ crucified, for sinners died. The first half of the book includes printables for individual uppercase and lowercase cursive letters. In the second half, the letters are attached to help teach the flowing pattern of cursive script. I recommend printing out the entire book and laminating the pages if you wish to reuse them with an erasable marker.

  • NEWS: Cathedral Village bits and bites

NEWS: Cathedral Village bits and bites

Two things of importance to report today. Actually, make that three.

1.) I am still on a carbohydrate high from all the perogies, rice, noodles, pasta, and dessert consumed during Mosaic this weekend. Hope that everyone indulged just as much as I did at this great annual event that showcases just how diverse our city is.

2.) A few weeks ago I posted a review of The Mercury Cafe. Since that time, a number of people have posted comments about the place. Last week, one reader alleged that the Mercury's burgers were not homemade, contrary to what it says on the Mercury's menu. Here's what she wrote:

    Anonymous said...

I was expecting a homemade hamburger when the menu stated all burgers were homemade. To my surprise (and disappointment), I watched the cook take a box of burgers out of the freezer and place them on the grill... there was nothing homemade about them. I will admit they were good burgers for storebought box burgers but definitely not homemade. :(
    May 26, 2010 9:37 PM

I was a bit shocked by this. I really believed the burger I ate was homemade -- both the look and taste of the burger did not seem like they came from Safeway across the street. Then again, you never really know unless you're in the kitchen standing next to the chef.
Today, I posted two more comments on this topic, presumably from employees at the Mercury. They said:

    Anonymous said...

Actually you couldn't be more wrong. The burgers are 100% home made and not store bought - NOR FROZEN. Not sure what you were smoking that day but you were hallucinating. If you are interested in our process of making the burgers talk to the owner next time you are in and he will be happy to show you.
    June 4, 2010 9:59 AM

    Dave said...

Don't post lies. All the burgers are home made!!! Have a look next time you are in.
    June 5, 2010 6:39 PM

I have to say, I'm willing to give Anonymous and Dave the benefit of the doubt. With that, I think this matter is settled. The Mercury's burgers are homemade. And they're good, too.
3.) The former Cafe Orange on Robinson Street has reinvented itself as Orange Izakaya (izakaya is Japanese for pub). While the doors have reopened, the place is back to serving coffee for the next couple of weeks until the new menu and lounge atmosphere are fully ready. Early reports are good.
This from my frien d LRadd on Twitter: " Cafe Orange has been majorly sexified -can't wait for the bar to open. For now having a coffee on the patio. If ur in the 'hood stop by."
And with that I'm off to enjoy this awesome sunny Sunday. Happy eating.

  • Teaching Children To Memorize Scripture | Part 1

It's a well known fact that a child's ability to remember things is second to none. The capacity to soak up their influences is the motivating factor behind our government's resolve to get them into the classroom at an increasingly young age. Once they're out from underneath their parent's control, the state has a no-holds-barred approach to indoctrinating our children with immorality and socialistic propaganda. This explains why the 4-year-olds in our province are going to school and being taught to question their gender, and why books like Heather has Two Mommies is perfectly acceptable story-time material.

It wouldn't be so bad if it was truth and righteousness our government was so concerned about instilling into our children. But then, if it was really God's Word the government looked to as their moral compass, they probably wouldn't be so quick to snatch the future of the nation away from their parents as soon as possible. Proverbs 22:6 was written to Dads and Moms; it is our duty to train up our children in the way that they should go, not the state's.

This reason, coupled with the desire to see our children's salvation and a life-time of blessing from the Lord, ought to make Scripture memorization and biblical instruction fundamental to the everyday life of a Christian family (Psalm 119: 9-11; Deuteronomy 6: 6,7; 1 Peter 3:15). If our children learn to abide by God's principles and commandments concerning marriage, economics, and life in general, they will become the leaders in a society that is craving for morality, prosperity, and stability.

What we think are the basics of life (i.e. arriving to a job on time and sober) are becoming extinct in a culture that's lost its way. This give a distinct advantage to the child who has learned to abide by God's formula for a happy and peaceful life:

"Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stand in the path of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful, but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in his law he meditates, day and night." Psalm 1:1,2"He who heeds the Word wisely will find good, and whoever trusts in the Lord, happy is he." Proverbs 16:20"... His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who has called us by glory and virtue, by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust." 2 Peter 1: 3,4If we want to give our children a good life, we must give them God's Word. It is the key to salvation and the pattern for success. No amount of toys, allowance money, clothes, or candy can produce righteousness or an outstanding member of society. We cannot save our children; that is an act of God's grace alone. But we can hide God's Word in their hearts and take comfort in knowing that it will never return to Him void (Isaiah 55:11).

Flea Market Finds Pour La Semaine Trente Quatre

    Hello fabulous ones!
I'm so happy you stopped by because it's time once again for..
    FLEA... MARKET... FINDS!!
WHOOP WHOOP!! Can I get a Skippity do?!! *winks* How about a shabba dabba ding dong?!!
OK... or maybe not lol!... Can I at least get you to take a look see, and leave me a comment? I've got my fingers crossed for that *winks*
I don't have much to share this week because I purchased a couple of pricey items that ate up my entire budget (And then some to be honest *winks*) But all the coming mac-n-cheese will be worth it... Eating can be so highly overrated! Lol!

As it often happens I have two favorites this week. I'm going to start with this nifty bergere chair that I found for $65 at a local antique mall. The last cool frenchy (affordable) chair I found I let go to a friend so this time around I'm keeping this one!
Isn't it a cutie? I'm even digging the mustard yellow color *winks*

And do you spy IT in the background? If you've been reading my last couple of posts you might have guessed how enamoured I am with... Victorian Domes! So tied for first place... Yes another wonderful French victorian globe!! This one was an ebay find for $195 which I think is a really good price. The flowers are made of silk and the vase is Vieux Paris (Old Paris) porcelain. The bouillotte lamp in the background was a $28 find from awhile ago.

Isn't it a pretty thing?! I'm obsessed with these beauties! Does anybody else feel that way about them?

And finally, at long last I found the perfect piece to fit in my cement grotto, this wonderful old chippy Madonna ($30) I think she's the perfect size... This was the third Madonna purchased for this grotto. The others just weren't quite the right so I'm happy the third one was the charm!

    Perfectly mouldering and chippy *sighs*

I also received a special something in the mail from my friend Lana at Lana Austin Motif: blog. She has a lovely etsy store with lots of European treasures HERE She brought this lovely antique chandelier all the way from Italy for me. It needs to have a little work done but when I'm finished it's gonna look great! Thank you Lana I love it!! I can't wait to put it up in my guest room closet. (I'm aiming for a chandelier in every room including the closets *winks*) I'll share that in a future post.

This french oak and rattan coffee table was another find from my trip with my friend Joyce a few weeks ago. It needs a glass piece for the top but at $49 I thought the price was pretty good! Dont'cha love the little escargot (snails in french) feet?

I found these two antique shades for $8 each at a local antique store. They're pretty tattered and timeworn but I still love em! Now I just need to find the perfect lamps...

And finally this frenchy shelf from the Goodwill for $2.99. It's a horrible gold (and plastic) so I won't feel bad about painting it a nice creamy white and using it outside.

That's all for this week my friends. I hope you'll come back next week when I'll have one more very special victorian globe to share with you. I hope you'll leave me a comment and I'll do the same because I LOVE hearing from you! And I LOVE visiting you too! Vanna

Be sure to link to your nominees within your post. 4. Let them know that they have received this award by commenting on their blog. 5. Share the love and link to this post and to the person from whom you received your award. So my choices for this award go to: 1. Chari at Happy To Design 2.Mary Ellen at megardengal 3.Laura Lu at Hidden Promise 4. Gloria at Happy To Be 5.Linda at royaltouch 6.Debbie at Confessions of a Plate Addict 7. Michelle at Chocolate and Marmalade Tea 8. Kathysue who doesn't have a blog yet (but should! Lol !) and is another wonderful cyber sister! 9. Chrissy at The Apothacary Shop 10. Marty at A Stroll Thru Life And then... I came home 3 days ago and found a large parcel on my front porch. It was a very special package from my dear friend Mary Ellen at megardengal. Ya see I was visiting her blog as I often do, when I spied her new and fabulous header picture! HERE Well my heart skipped a beat while looking at her wonderful vignette featuring the neatest old wire cloche! And she shared with us that she had another if anyone would be interested? As well as a couple of crowns. Well I jumped on that cloche faster than you could say "SOLD!" But alas I was not quite fast enough to claim any of the wonderful crowns *sighs* So I did what any blogger in her WRONG mind would do... I cried "WAAAAHHHHH... I moped... I begged Mary Ellen to find me another one... We're talkin ' crowns here after all! And anyone who's read my blog for any length of time KNOWZES I LOVEZES THEMS!!! Must HAVEZ THEMS!!!... NEEDZES THEMS NOW!! Well Mary Ellen, God bless her heart, found a couple more and sent them to me along with the fabu wire cloche! So I'd already started to open the box when I realized... Hey!... This is the stuff that blogs are made of!! So I quickly grabbed my trusty camera and snapped away *winks* This was what greeted my eyes... And what could it be?? I mean, I know I asked for two crowns and a cloche... But this doesn't look like either of those... you can click on any of the pictures to enlarge em!

And look at how charmingly it's wrapped! In old music pages and gold angel thread!

It's the most darling little picture holder made from a piece of vintage silverplate ! And not just ANY silverplate, but a fork belonging to one of Marys dear friends Millicent. Mary made it herself! Mary I love it sooo much! Thank you!

Look at how perfectly it works for this small painting!

Digging back in the box I spied this... Now I know what this is!

It's my new (old) wire cloche!! So now I can create a vignette just like Marys! Yippee!! Hooray!!
Ummmm how did she do that again?
OK lets see... I need a little birds nest (with bird and eggs)... some old ribbon and lace... A charming 19th century drawing of some sort... Moss... A silver tray... Pedestal cake stand... Yikes! It never dawned on me when I saw her fabulous vignette that I didn't really HAVE any of that stuff!

Well I'll just put that on the back burner for now and move on to the crowns! Yeppers ! That's what I'll do! And maybe I'll find some inspiration... somewhere... Here is crown #1. I did happen to find a birds nest and even a 19th century french Jesus... But since I used em for the crown I still didn't have anything for the cloche...

Here's crown #2. Very regal dont'cha think? Reminds me of those old Imperial Margarine commercials lol ! Remember them? Da da da da !! And a crown pops on their head after taking a bite of YUMMY margarine!Lol!

So's I had to scramble for somethin '... anything! To place under the cloche. I finally gathered a few of my vantines incense burners, another moss ball and a little column stand from the Goodwill and VOILA!... OK it doesn't look remotely as cool as Marys *winks* But after all she's a vignette queen and this stuff just doesn't come easily for me! I'll just have to keep finding inspiration from y'all! After all imitation is the sincerest form of flattery! Right?... Ummmm OK?... Come on naw ????!... Well I'm gonna COPY Y'ALL AND THAT'S THAT! Lol !!*winks*

So here's my composition all together! The cherub is a recent ebay find. I just love him!

Isn't he just the cutest little gipper ?!! Love those chubby little legs!*winks*

And not that you probably want to see another shot of my mess... But for those crazy friends of mine who do... Here's my vignette at a distance hehe !

I also received my very first blog prize!! Some sweet gift tags from even sweeter Crystal over at Olive Rue! If you haven't visited her blog, you MUST!! She's a photographer and takes the most beautiful dreamy romantic shots! Just enchanting! She also sells a variety of these tags if you are interested. Here are a few she selected for me. Aren't they cute?!! Well of course they are!! They have cherubs on em!! *winks*

Thank you so much Crystal! And thanks y'all for stopping by my attempt at vignetting! Lol !! (Yes I know it's not a word! But when has that ever stopped me?!!) *winks* And last but definitely not least, Mary gave me this small jar filled with her homemade candied lemon peel as a little treat. Yummy-O-Ramma !! I had the hardest time NOT eating all the candied peel before I took the shot! Needless to say, there had been twice as much when I received the little bugger... And now that my shoot is finished, it's GONE BABY GONE!! You can get Marys recipe HERE if you're interested in making some yourself... And please send some more to me!! *winks* Vanna

  • Flea Market Finds Pour La Semaine Quatorze

Flea Market Finds Pour La Semaine Quatorze

It's time once again for Flea Market Finds!! WHOOT WHOOT!! OK now that I've made some noise over pretty much nothing *winks* I have to say that the amazing finds were not to be found (by me) last week... but... I did find some pretty good scores IMHO. Those of y'all who've read my blog a little, know how much I LOVE LOVE LOVE busts!! I have a collection of marble ladies that I adore, and my madness for busts has worn off on some of my fellow blogging buddies. Weeeeellllll... they found themselves some wonderful frenchy girl busts and had me feeling a little green with envy! Like my friend Chari at Happy To Design HERE And my dear friend Gloria at Happy To Be HERE. So I was tickled PINK when I found this sweet french girl bust from a local antique store for $28!

Speaking of PINK... I liked her so much that I felt my french armoire in my shabby guestroom could use a little revamp, so I added some pink vintage barkcloth curtains on a tension rod and hung them in the background. Here's the before with a mirrored background. You can just spy a reflection of the bed.

    And here's the after

Not earth shattering to be sure. Pretty much the same stuff (with the addition of the new bust and one other cute little thang...

This darling vintage mannequin hand that I found for $11 at the Vintage Nest. I've been having all sorts of fun putting different jewelry and objects on it! It makes a perfect display from my minerva medallion.
Here's a close up on the middle shelf.

    And the top.

What do you think? Is it an improvement at all? The jury is still out for me, but I was too tired to redo the whole thing again so I'm gonna live with it and see how I feel about it later. *winks*
I also found this 1920's lace and silk dresser scarf for $8 and I'm currently using it on a vanity seat in my bedroom. Isn't it pretty?

Here's a shot of the entire gentlemens vanity.

I also found a set of taxidermy pheasants for $65 at a favorite antique store. They'll be flying to my hubbs man cave office *winks* but it was too dark in there for photos today. I loves me my taxidermy birds! You can see my post on my newest peacock HERE if you missed it.

And funny how when it rains it pours? I found this little faux pheasant at the Value Village for $1.99. Do you find yourself buying in groups of things? For some reason it seems to happen to me often. Now if I could only stumble upon a cache of 18th century french chairs for cheaps! *winks*

And my last find this vintage rose tablecloth from the Value Village for $1.49. It has some stains that I couldn't manage to remove, but that's OK, It'll make it easier to use, and I won't mind if somebody spills their red wine *winks*

Thanks for stopping by! I hope you'll leave me a comment and come back next week for more flea market finds. Vanna

Sunday Favorites Craigslist Do You Love It?

I'm joining my friend Chari for her Sunday Favorites.
This post was from December of 2008.
Please excuse the picture quality, the icon sized photos didn't enlarge well, but hopefully you'll be able to see what I'm talking about *winks*
I hope you enjoy revisiting this post.

As many of y'all know (and probably wish they didn't) I am a bargain lovin' crazy shoppin' fool!! I have champagne taste on a domestic beer budget (at best*winks*) So I LOVE to check out all the finds on craigslist! Do you do this too? Sometimes I find the most amazing things for cheaps! Unfortunately even "cheaps" is straining the budget lately! So I did some virtual shopping instead. Will you join me on a tour of my finds at craigslist? Most are still available and waiting to find a good home! And I'd LOVE to hear about your finds too!!

Well let me begin with these darling antique trophy cups. The tallest measures 11" and two of them are sterling silver! All five for only $50! Wouldn't they look wonderful gracing someones secretary, mantle, or bookshelf? Hmmm awfully tempting... but lets keep looking...

Lets see... how about a chandelier? I soooos love my blingys! And this one is only $50!... Nope probably better not... hubby is complaining about the six hanging in the garage... But they were such great deals!!! And they all have such sparkley warkley beauty! How could I possibly say no? Well... I'm going to be strong here. And y'all who know me already KNOW how hard it is for me to walk away from a crystal chandy at this price!*winks*

OK confession time! This next beauty is no longer on craigslist..and hasn't been for some time because it DID come home with me! The only thing harder for me to walk away from than a sparkley warkley chandelier, is a french armoire at a killer price! $300 was the asking price but simply for asking if that was his "friendliest price?" I got it for $250!! Yippee!! Oh happy happy day!! I had NO idea where I was going to use this baby, and briefly considered painting it... But hubby had a fit! What is it with men and painting wood? welll...

Hubby turned out to be right! And now it lives in my family room and houses all my TV stuffs. Here it is all cleaned up in its new home *winks*

Now this one is really tempting!... Needs some work! But ooohhh that faux marble! And it's antique and italian!! Like music to my ears! But wait it gets better!! It's $130 or best offer! I might just have to pick up the phone on this one!... OK after a careful consideration of 5 seconds, I'd better pass. I don't have room for one more armoire in my house unless I use it in that shabby white bedroom of mine... And then we're back to painting the furniture, and battles with hubby. Maybe someday he'll vacation without me and I can have my wicked way with an armoire heh heh heh!

Just check out those columns! Aren't they somethin' somethin'?

Now this is for all the shabby chic-ers! And yes I am a closet shabby chic-er... And I am tired of living in the closet! I long to do my entire house in this pale romantic dreamy style!! All that white beauty surrounding me in a veil of calm and tranquility! Until one of my furbabies decides to jump up and sleep on the slip covered sofy in my vision of white... probably with muddy feet. Hubby is also strangely hostile and resistant to this style... silly man! Anyhoo check out this SWEET!!!! bedroom set. It would be fabulous in a big or little girls room! At $750 for the set it's a little pricey but oh sooo charming! Don't you agree?

Close up on the hand painted florals

This is a double headboard but the owner said they used it on a queen. Hmm not so sure about that...

Dig this vanity! Helooo Mr owner man... give a deal to meeeeee!

Now getting hotter!! Y'all know I have a thang for french, frenchy, curvy, foofy things for cheaps! And this has everything in spades! And at only $200!! Where or where could I sneak this in so hubby won't divorce me?... Hmmmm might be worth it!... I'm just kidding honey (if you're reading this! Really, no foolin! Kiss kiss!) Wouldn't this work great for holding a TV? Or used in a bathroom to house a sink? Or... And this is the one I like best... To hold a whole collection of marble busts!!! Yeah baby! *winks*

How about a darling kidney beaner desk? This one is only $250 and has such great lines!

Now this is one that DID get away from me! I hesitated too long and didn't want to drive the 30 miles required to pick it up. When I checked a few days later... it was GONE! And it was only $15! What was I thinkin'?!! It's only an hour total for a fab birdcage!... Well I was too lazy... and that's the truff *sighs*

Threw this one in also for my shabby chic friends. Isn't the paint perfect on this charming little table? $65 is the asking price but I'm sure they could do a little better... *winks*

Or how about an older chocolate set? It comes with plates too! For $50 it could be yours!

Now these are also on my VERY short list!! There are a pair of these beautiful chairs for $250. They are soooo screaming my name! VANNA... take me home VANNA!! I have a thang for frenchy chairs as well! Don't ya think chairs have the most personality of any furniture pieces?

I am incredibly tempted by these! And sooo impressed with my AMAZING willpower!... ok and the fact that I have zero money... Haha!

And here's my finisher, a fabu ramous french settee! Yes it's just a tad costy ($395) But just look at those legs!! They could do pirouettes!! And in an entry hall wouldn't it look amazing!!... Crap-o-noodles! I don't have an entry hall! What a dream crusher!

Well that's all for now. I really enjoyed sharing this shopping experience with you! And so far today I haven't spent a dime! Hubby would be SOOOO PROUD!! But there's always tomorrow... *winks* Vanna
P.S. I'm still sad about missing out on those french chairs! Weren't they fabulous?!
Please stop by Chari's place and check out the many other Sunday Favorites!

    Dear Abbey:

It's about this time of year when the intended joy of Christmas starts to compete with the utter madness of Christmas.

The lineups at the grocery store are longer; the parking spots at the Cornwall Centre are fewer -- heck, the lineup just to get out of the parkade is enough to make you cringe. What's a guy to do?
    Signed,
    Crazy for Christmas

    - - - - - - - -
    Dear CC:

There are plenty of ways to deal with Christmas Craze. Some of them involve muttering swears underneath your breath. Others involve a simple retreat to a welcoming watering hole.

    I suggest the latter.
    Yours,
    Abbey

    - - - - - - - -

Today me and Big Willie opted for an easy Sunday morning and headed over to The Abbey on Albert Street. It was a brutally cold morning to brave the outdoors but the lure of breakfast without having to cook it was enough to get us out there.

I'd been to The Abbey a couple of times since it opened in December '08. My first visit, less than a week after the doors opened, was good but a little rough around the edges. And that's to be fully expected so early in the game.

My second visit, about two months later, left me with a bad taste in my mouth -- literally. A friend and I went for a Sunday-night supper before heading out to a show at the Brandt Centre. I had high hopes that the kitchen would have ironed out the wrinkles by that point but I left feeling happy with the atmosphere yet disappointed with the food, especially a very greasy pizza that was overcooked.

Since that time, I learned that The Abbey hired a new head chef. I was a bit reluctant to go back until a few friends and coworkers reported positive experiences recently.

Today, my third visit proved to be the lucky charm. Big Willie and I were seated quickly on the second-floor balcony overlooking the dining room. We took a few minutes to study the brunch menu and then placed our order.

I decided to keep things simple and ordered The Usual -- two eggs any style (I went with Sunny Side Up), bacon or sausage, hash browns, toast, and a few pieces of fruit. I figure if a kitchen can't get the most basic breakfast items right then there's little hope they'll succeed with anything else.

Big Willie chose The Eden Eggs Benedict (served with tomato and spinach on a homemade biscuit). We also opted to share The Abbey Salad, which came recommended by a friend.

All things said, our only complaint with the food was that it took too long to hit the table (close to half an hour). On the one hand, this wasn't an outrageous amount of time. On the other hand, you start to wonder what's going on after about 15 minutes at breakfast time. Both our waitress and the floor manager gave sincere apologies for the delay, so at least they were aware of the problem.

Otherwise, the food was delicious. I'm not normally a fan of Eggs Benedict but The Eden won me over. I think it was the fresh, crumbly homemade biscuit that did it. Big Willie was pretty pleased with his choice, too.

My eggs were cooked perfectly, not always the case when you order Sunny Side Up. And the best part of The Usual? The crispy sausage, just like we used to eat at home when I was a kid. I'm happy to report that The Abbey serves real sausage -- not the greasy breakfast kind that some people seem to love.

The Abbey Salad, strangely the most expensive item we ordered, was also pretty delish. A Roast Shallot Dressing came drizzled over mixed greens, grilled chicken, bacon, crumbled blue cheese, and a few slices of pear. This salad was a meal in itself and is also on the restaurant's lunch menu. I think it's safe to say I'll be back for it someday.

To make a nice meal even nicer, The Abbey plays host to live jazz music on Sundays from 11-2. Today's warm groove, combined with the awesome Viennese Dark Roast coffee, pretty much made us forget it was 30 degrees below zero, at least for awhile.

All in all, The Abbey is finally coming into its own as a restaurant. Despite the odd glitch here and there, it seems that things are almost nearing perfection.

If they keep this up they might just start to lure me away from La Bodega a bit more often.

    Kudos to you, The Abbey.

Flea Market Finds Pour La Dixième Semaine

Won't you please entrer dans mon boudoir?

This is where my finds for this week begin. Could you come a little closer?

My finds start with rhinestones!! So glam-n-girly 1950's!

I found the telescoping cigarette holder in a thrift store for the non-thrift price of $40. Had to have it though because it matched so well with my other sparkly warkly finds *winks* The broach was $5 and the lipstick case was $12. (still had the coolest shade of red lipstick in it too!) The comb cover $14. And the Irice perfume bottle in the back for $4. Not the greatest prices maybe, but not too bad?

This rhinestone bracelet was $1 at the thrift.

This little tintype of a girl was $10. Isn't she cute?

Shown on Glory Isabella (yes I finally named her. Glory for my bestest blogging buddy Gloria! And Isabella was the favorite bloggers choice) is an old hat full of pale pink millinery flowers for $10. Necklace by cupids charm. She's making the handiest model!

They're very shabby chic dont'cha think?!

OK will you now please follow me into le salon?

Where I'd like to share with you this victorian wool jacket in quite amazing and wearable shape (If I were only small enough *winks*) for $25. I have a really beautiful victorian dress to go with it that I'll share at another time.
And I've saved what I consider the best for last...
This tapestry featuring a shepherd and his wife. I was told it's from the 1950's? I probably paid too much for it at $70, but finding anything remotely tapestry "like" around here isn't easy.

It's over 6.5' tall and 5' wide. It's a little bigger than shown because I wrapped it around my trumeau to share with you.

Lookie! Even the goats look happy!
However on a less happy note for moi..

and in the "misery loves company" category, I found my dream shabby fireplace surround... and it was already SOLD! I could've cried! This baby would've MADE my bedroom!

Just look at all that perfect shabby beau-tay!! *sniffle sniffle* I'm just a little bit sick about it. Oh well I guess it wasn't meant to be... Wanna join my pitty party? I'll bring the margaritas... As soon as I pull myself off the floor. Not that I'm not incredibly grateful for all the many lovely blessings I do have mind you *winks* I AM!

Well that's my finds for the week. Thank you for stopping by! I hope you'll come back next week for more flea market finds. I'll try not to be such a baby about things *winks* I hope you'll leave me a comment. I'd love to hear from you!

Another week goes by, and this blog grows another inch or two. Bear with me, folks. It is truly a work in progress.

It was tough to decide which restaurant to talk about next -- actually, that's just a cliche. It wasn't so tough this time. The Four Seas Restaurant on Rose Street downtown is a new discovery for me. Me and Big Willie have been there three times in the last three weeks. And we're now frequently trying to recruit our friends. Surely that's worth writing about.

From the outside, the Four Seas is easily forgettable. Heck, from the inside too. Mind you, the owners have done a decent job of sprucing up this old building that has clearly been through a few restaurant incarnations during its lifetime.

Anyway, the surroundings are secondary. What I really go for is the food. And what the Four Seas really does best, as far as I'm concerned, is Dim Sum.

OK, perhaps it's time for a definition. Not everyone is familiar with Dim Sum (but everyone should be!).

Essentially, Dim Sum is this: a wide range of Chinese dishes served on small plates alongside tea. You could think of it as the Chinese version of tapas. What you must not think of is Chicken Balls, Sweet and Sour Pork, or giant, greasy Egg Rolls. Dim Sum is NOT that kind of Chinese food.

The most exciting part of Dim Sum is when the waitresses come around with carts of food inside small bamboo steamers. You never know what's on the cart until they take the lid off -- and try to tempt you.

Each time I've been there are new items, but you can count on there always being Shrimp Dumplings, Pork Dumplings, Steamed Buns, Spareribs, and a few vegetable dishes. There will also be things that you have never seen before, but don't worry. The waitresses are happy to answer any questions that you have.

In larger cities with larger Chinese communities, you'll find huge, loud Dim Sum restaurants where the waitresses fly past you with carts and you practically have to scream to get their attention.

The Four Seas is on a smaller, quieter scale. It's nonetheless a welcome addition to Regina's list of restaurants. And it's definitely popular with Regina's Chinese community who fill the place by 11:30 a.m. on weekend mornings.

Big Willie, who is half-Chinese, says that the Four Seas Dim Sum reminds him of the food his grandma made when he was a kid. If that's not a compliment, I don't know what is.

The next time you find yourself bored with what Regina restaurants have to offer, head downtown for Dim Sum. A whole new culinary world awaits you....

  • Flea Market Finds Pour La Semaine Quarante-Cinq And another Giveaway!!

Flea Market Finds Pour La Semaine Quarante-Cinq And another Giveaway!!

    Hello beautiful peeps!!
It's that time of the week once again... Time for FLEA MARKET FINDS!!
Where I name places and share prices... (Usually *winks*)
And truthfully I'm not a very good bargain shopper (I do try) so I'll make you feel GREAT about your own found treasures if nothing else LOL!
I have a new item to win this week in my blog followers giveaway (Two more weeks to go with a new little thank you gift each week so keep stopping by!) And keep on reading to see what this weeks little pressie will be *winks*
I would also like to announce the winner of last weeks angel giveaway.
    THE WINNER IS...
LEENA of Pink*Cherub*Moon Congrats Leena! Please email me with your shipping info.

This last week was again a little short on fantabulous finds because I'm still short on funds. I did manage to find a few really good deals... Well I think they are anyway *winks*
So as usual I'm starting with my favorite find...
This antique painted spelter bust of a lady standing at 15" tall and a whopping 8.5 lbs. I know because I weighed her when I got her home after I almost torqued out my one wrist reaching up on top of an armoire with an oh so confident "devil may care" attitude to grab her down whilst clutching a coffee cup with the other. That will teach me... she almost landed on my noggin!... Or worse yet I might have smashed one of the sellers delicate pieces! Or even worse *shudders*... lost my COFFEE!!
I took one look at her at a local antique mall and thought to myself " Ooohhh I bet my friend Gloria at Happy To Be blog would love her!" (Gloria is an avid collector of Victoriana and has lovely taste!)
Now how many of you have been motivated to buy something because your besties would love the "thing" in question? Of course you're probably "besties" in the first place because you love similar things huh? *winks* Well this beauty said "Gloria" And I said "Wrap er up!" Lol!

Just look at the sweet details. I love the little cherub head on the belt! And the bunches of violets.

She's placed on two silver trays that were Value Village (thrift store) finds. The largest at $24.99 and the smaller at $10.99. I was thinking I'd take them home and polish them up, but I think I actually prefer their current more tarnished appearance. Do you prefer your silver polished?

And do you see all the luscious fruit surrounding my girl?
It's all made of stone (alabaster and marble) I scored a major score in finding it also at the local Value Village (In a big bowl no less) for $9.99!

Now just one bunch of the grapes will cost more than that. I couldn't even fit all the fruit on the tray there was too much of it! I'd guess it's from the 60's-70's.

The little cloche came from the Goodwill for $1.99 and inside it are a couple of bling-y Christmas ornaments I found for $3.50 each.

The pearl rosary my lady bust is wearing is child size and was $25 (at a local antique mall) with the mother of pearl shell case.

I found this little cherub with a wheelbarrow at the same antique mall and paid way too much at $45. He had been priced $95! (Crack smokin' seller *winks*) but he's so adorable and I'm a cherub-o-holic! I did what any cherub loving quasi bargain shopping gal would do... I caved in the face of cherub cuteness... More mac-n cheese...

    Isn't he adorable though?

This antique celluloid box was $6.99 at the Value Village...

It's in rough shape, but beautiful lady + cherubs+ cheap = Yeppers you know the drill.

I also found this assortment of plates and bowls at the VV. The least expensive being.99 and the most being the small platter on the top at $6.99 (From Bohemia) The least expensive plate which looks like quimper is by Longchamps. The large rose plate was $3.99 and has such pretty blowsey pink roses!

    Don'tcha think?

    Bohemia platter.

At the Goodwill I found this set of pink pillowcases from Simply Shabby Chic for $3.80. I had never seen this pattern before... Have you?

    Close up.

I also found a mother lode of Ralph Lauren sheets at the Goodwill for between $2.99 and $7.99. Ralph Lauren florals stop me in my tracks every time! And I can spot em from a mile off *winks* You've gotta love the Goodwill!!

Then to top off my wonderful week I received a surprise at the front door! I couldn't remember ordering anything?... But my memory isn't what it used to be... so maybe...
What I found inside was about the most beautifully presented packages I've ever received! From the sweeter than sweet Cindy of Edith & Evelyn on Etsy. She just wanted to say thank you for giving her store a little shout out... Awwwwww I couldn't believe she did that! I gave her shop a shout out because I LOVE it! Cindy has such beautiful things and at reasonable prices (IMHO) So if you purchase anything from her you're in for a wonderful surprise! Let me know if you do OK? *winks*
Pretty toile and tulle ribbons, handmade tags, beautiful script, and not shown a fab antique French postcard! Such a delight!

When I'd carefully unwrapped the two bundles (Saving all the pretty ribbons)... Honestly I didn't even want to open them they were just so pretty! I found these two darling busts of a boy and girl from an old Alabama estate. Thank you so much Cindy! I love them!

OK and last, but hopefully not least... My giveaway for this week is for this lovely rose encrusted vintage blanc de chine heart shaped trinket box. Perfect for a little treasure or two.

If you'd like a chance to win it become a follower (If you aren't already *winks*) and leave me a comment telling me you'd like it to be yours... And even if you aren't interested in this giveaway I'd still LOVE to hear from you! Vanna
