There's a new shop in town and it's garnering some attention these days. Willow Park Wines & Spirits officially opened its South Albert Street doors about a week ago.
Now before you go and point out the obvious (that this blog is supposed to be about food and restaurants) let me justify. If there is one thing that goes with food, besides a good appetite, it's wine. OK you got me there, too. Plenty of other drinks go with food -- but wine ranks right up there, that's for sure.
Willow Park is the first of Regina's new privately-owned wine stores, something the provincial government is trying out on a limited basis. So, how does it differ from the good 'ole LB?
Most noticeable are the slightly longer operating hours. Willow Park is open until 10 p.m. six nights per week (that's an hour later than SLGA stores). Plus it's open for an extra two hours on Sundays (until 7 p.m.).
Unless you're a wine connoisseur, you're unlikely to appreciate this next point: Willow Park carries many wines that you won't find on the shelves at Normanview Mall or on Victoria East. Except for a few bottles of beer, wine is all they carry so that shouldn't be a surprise. However, if there's a label you just haven't been able to find at the SLGA stores, Willow Park is a good place to take your search.
The store's interior is suited-up for wine and food tastings. Expect a number of both in the coming months.
Willow Park's geographic location, on Albert Street's busy south end, seems like a safe bet. On the other hand, the actual store itself is tucked back about 100 feet from the street in a dated strip mall. Some extra signage might go a a long way.
Whether you'll use Willow Park for your next wine purchase or stick to your neighbourhood joint remains to be seen. But a little extra competition can't hurt the marketplace.
It's that time of the week again for... FLEA MARKET FINDS!!!! Or the closest thing to it I can find in my neck of the world *winks* I wasn't in a shopping mood this last week (Yes hell is in fact freezing over *winks*) so nothing too fabulous to share, just a few neat things (I hope?) I'm starting with my second favorite find as my first is perhaps just a tad too risque to be showing up on the blogs of those sweet folks who are kind enough to have me on their blog lists... You'll see what I mean... Anyhoo this week the theme was dolls. I found a few to add to my boudoir doll collection. And as usual the 1920's played a big role too. This 1920's wax over composition doll was quite a rare find. She's actually an old powder box that I've filled with some chocolates... because I have my priorities *winks* I've been collecting these boudoir dolls for a little while now and although there are many of the doll powder boxes, this is one of the only ones I've seen like this so I'm thrilled to have her!
Box of chocolates... Yumm!! I've got plenty for you and me! *winks*
OK... WARNING... If nekkid ladies bother you? You'll want to skip the next two pictures, but for those who love nudes like I do, this one is kind of special. She's a rare incense burner named the "Smoking Venus" She's a little rough around the edges but I've been searching for one for years. They usually go way out of my price range ($500+ with clothes on, the nudes are more expensive yet) but I found this one for $160 and snapped her up faster than you can say "Have you got a light?" Lol! She burns cone incense under her stool... seat... bottom? (There's just no way to make this sound right, but you get the idea) which comes out of her mouth as if she's smoking. She really IS smoking hot! Haha!
I couldn't capture just how perfectly it spirals out of her mouth and hangs in the air, but you can see how she works here.
Another favorite find was this bouillotte lamp (Pronounced Boo-yacht) Bouillotte was a french card game that was popular in the 18th century and this type of lamp would've been placed in the center of the gaming table providing light and the basket base would've held gaming chips. The shade is tole (enamelled or lacquered metal ware) and adjusts up or down to conform to the candles burned. My 1920's lamp has both light bulbs and spots for candles. The arrow at the top adjusts the height up and down the center pole. This style lamp is one of my absolute favorites and can be quite expensive, but I found this one at a local antique store for $50 which is quite a steal! Yippee!! I'm trying it out to see if I like it in my living room.
Another rare 1920's boudoir doll find was this wax over composition munzerlite vanity doll lamp. Although I've seen lots of the boudoir doll lamps I've never seen one like this before with metal hangers that would allow her to hang on the mirror of a vanity. so I had to have her even though she's a little rough as well. *winks*
From one of my favorite online shops Maison De Wine And Wienies came this cool 1920's picture frame with barbola detail. Now living in my closet armoire.
And another sweet boudoir lady missing an arm but still very charming don't you think?
Also from Maison De Wine And Wienies this rare doll powder puff.
Her silk dress is shredded but she's still lovely to me.
And this find is a bit strange. I don't know if he represents a saint? Or Jesus? Did he come from a church? I have no idea. Maybe one of you will know? But he was too interesting to pass up... Though I probably should have because there's zippo room at my house *winks*
And back again to the 1920's where women wore dresses and men wore... makeup? Check em out! *winks* this tin tray was $10. I love the graphics.
Close up. I think it will fit in perfectly with my boudoir ladies. (You can click to enlarge)
And finally a couple of art nouveau trinket boxes found on etsy at $30 for the set. The smallest case has a cherub on top and I'm a cherub-o-holic!!
Still bearing remnants of their original silk.
Well that's it for this week. I hope you'll join me again next week for more flea market finds. Please leave me a message and I'll do the same. I LOVE to hear from you!! I had the brilliant idea of reporting the happenings on Regina's restaurant scene for Valentine's Day this year. After all, Valentine's Day is one of the busiest nights of the year for most restaurants. It's a time when people are actually looking to splurge a little.
As Valentine's falls on a Sunday this year, I thought that many restaurants would have planned something special. So far, the results have been a little disappointing.
Nonetheless, if you are planning a special night out it would be wise to make reservations soon.
Here's what I know so far. Please leave a comment if you know something that's not on this list:
The Abbey 2124 Albert Street 545-8811 Two-course dinner for two, $59; Two-course dinner for two with wine, $79. (This might be the best special I've found yet).
Beer Bros Bakery & Cuisine 1801 Scarth Street 586-2337 Feb. 8-14: celebrate Valentine's Day all week long with a special menu. The four-course "ex-beer-ience" is $40.00 plus tax and tip. Not too bad, methinks. Bitten 1822 Broad Street 586-BITE Open for Valentine's (normally closed on Sundays). Otherwise, I was told it will be a "normal night" with a new fresh sheet coming out on V-day for the rest of the month of February.
Crave 1925 Victoria Avenue 525-8777 Closed on Sundays -- no Valentine's specials here.
Hotel Saskatchewan - Cortlandt Hall Dining Room 2125 Victoria Avenue 337-4311 A three-course menu with your choice of starter, entree, and dessert for $69.00 As Valentine's falls on a Sunday, morning brunch will be served for $32.00 with a few special items in honour of the day. La Bodega 2228 Albert Street 546-3660 Two seatings are planned, one at 5:30 p.m., the other at 8 p.m. Dinner special plus the usual menu are on offer here.
Memories 1717 Victoria Avenue 522-1999 Two seating times: The first for reservations between 5-6 p.m.; the second for reservations between 7-8:30 p.m. Regular menu with a four-course special for two people (price not known at time of calling)
Willow on Wascana 3000 Wascana Drive 585-3663 Two seatings: one at 4:30 p.m.; the other at 7:30 p.m. The 4:30 seating offers a six-course meal; the 7:30 seating is an eight-course meal. Both meals are served with wine flights. $100/$125 respectively. Both seatings were full as of Feb. 4, but a cancellation list is available. (As a former waiter, I know that a number of people always cancel on Valentine's Day, especially on a Sunday. Give the list a try). Zest 2903 Powerhouse Drive 522-5250 A couple's menu will be featured for $75.00 per couple (a four-course meal).
Hi peeps!! Just a few things to share this week because of my shopping extravaganza last week *winks* I'll start as usual with my favorite find. It's a vintage HUGE rose covered fully lined curtain that I found at a local antique mall for $60! This one curtain is 8' tall and 15' long! I couldn't get the entire thing in a shot because it was just too big for my poor camera. It could easily be cut apart to make several individual curtains, which is what I'm hoping to do. Love the green color and all the roses!! Isn't it gorgy??*sighs*
Close up.
Then I found this Italian shadow box jewelry display case on craigslist for $15. Inside I have one new/old treasure and the other three are older finds but I haven't shared them here so I thought I'd take the opportunity now *winks*
The newest find is this cigarette case with a portrait of a woman. $12 at a local antique store. I will definitely be looking to collect more of these.
My next find is from a few years back. I paid $125 (which was actually half price) It's a micro petit point purse featuring a courting couple adorned with some stones and enamel flowers.
The back features a castle and swags with pink roses.
Lined with the palest pink ruched silk that is starting to tear and fray.
Next is this little silver mesh purse/compact that I purchased from an elderly neighbor for $15.
I would love it if these little blue stones were sapphires! *winks* But most likely pretty glass.
And finally this little beaded purse/compact was $10.
I found a new addition to my silver collection at the Goodwill. This silver glass caddy was on one isle for $1.99 and the dessert wine glasses were 50 cents each on another. So all told $4.99... Not bad I think!
And then I did discover something NEW to me... Maybe new to you also? Let me start by saying I've been in love with antiques for most of my life and in all that time I've never known about this... The Odd Fellows! Who and what are they? Weeellll... here's a little vid about them
The Odd Fellows (it turns out) are the Father of all fraternal organizations. Formed in England in the 18th century. I discovered them when I was trying to find information about these antique red velvet collars that I'd found on craigslist. A set of four of them for $12. Sooo ornate and beautiful with their silver appliques, fringe and tassels. I thought originally they might have been priests vestments of some sort? But was quickly made aware that they were something else. I took a look on ebay and couldn't believe how cheaply these items were selling! Some at 99 cents plus shipping, and some of the beautiful velvet ceremonial robes were little more than $20. Also some beautiful ornate medals for a song! I couldn't help but think of all the custom bag/purse and pillow makers who could use these old pieces in their designs. Am I the last one to know about these? Let me know! I feel I've discovered textile nirvana! Lol! *winks*
Each less than the cost of a latte!
And last (and definitely least) some vintage aqua lace trim from the Value Village for $1.99 and an egg vase for my etsy.
That's it for the flea market finds this week. I hope you'll come back next week for more thrifting fun! And please leave me a comment and I'll do the same for you *winks* I'd LOVE to hear from you! Vanna
Hi y'all! It's that time of the week once again for Flea Market Finds!!! Bet you weren't holding your breath for that one huh? *winks* just a few small things to share for this week. Try as I did to find an amazing garage sale, the weather just wasn't cooperating here in the Pacific Northwest. I hope the sun is gently shining on you wherever you are! And could you send a little my way? *winks* I'm going to start with my favorite find... a vintage lavender straw hat loaded with flowers from a local antique mall for $24. Kind of a lot for me but it was justtttttt right! Hats seemed to be my theme for the week.
It has lots of my favorite flowsey blowsey flowers!
Then my second favorite find (s) were these pretty vintage red wine glasses adorned with various courting couples from the Value Village. I paid $5.99 for each stem, but I'd never seen any quite like them, so home with me they came *winks*
Aren't they sweet?
Another antique mall find was this vintage painting for $20 featuring some of my favorite subjects... Sheep!! It's very folk-artsy dont'cha think?
A couple of darling boudoir pillows for my etsy.
As well as this sweet Dresden reticulated compote.
Another little addition to my boudoir doll collection for $12. I'm big time hooked on these!
One vintage avon perfume from 1976 and three vintage compacts (The mesh is Whiting and Davis) The smallest is a coty rouge compact (never used) and the largest needs a little rehab. I'm thinking of adding a rose decal to it? Or perhaps some rhinestones? I just loves me some bling! All for $7!
This little blue silk doll hat was $1 and I've been having fun trying it on every doll and marble bust in the house!
I found a set of these paper mache hand painted trays for $2.50.
And lastly this set of angel plaques to paint and play with ($2) lying on a set of Ralph Lauren Allison ruffled pillow shams for $3.98.
That's all for this week. Thanks so much for stopping by! I hope you'll leave me a comment and I'll do the same *winks* And please come back next week for more flea market finds! Vanna
I'm joining my friend Sherry at No Minimalist Here for:
Winter getting you down? Beer belly not quite round enough?
Lift your spirits and up the ante next weekend at the 5th annual Festive-Ale on February 5 and 6. Hosted by the Conexus Arts Centre, the event offers more beer than you could possibly drink, along with a smattering of wine and spirits.
OK I feel a little bit uncomfortable showing you my (not at all special) closet. Especially after the teasers for the last couple of weeks... I'm GOING WHERE NO WOMAN HAS GONE BEFORE! (Cue the Star Trek music) LOL! You see it's totally a builders grade cheap and blah space... But I longed for a little bit of "French pizazz"! (Me... imagine that *winks*) I didn't want to go in there every morning and think to myself "this is just plain ugly" *sighs* Alas I don't currently have the funds to transform my little closet into the Parisian palace I'd love it to be, but with the help of a few special blogging friends I did manage to add a few fabulous elements!
So come on in and I'll show you what I DO love about my closet... You first... I know it's going to get a little tight in here *winks* I started by adding a "closet" to my closet lol! If you read my blog you know how much I adore French armoires! So I thought "hey why not put one in the closet?" I have them in pretty much every other room in the house *winks* So voila! BIG french flavor!... Little unhappy husband with sore back, but that's another story... *winks*
Do you see the screen to the left? "Really"( you're asking yourself) " how could I miss it? I've got my nose practically squeezed into it in here!" *winks* Well it came all the way from Missouri from my dear friend Richard's store. Richard has the most wonderful blog "My Old Historic House" HERE. When you've managed to squeeze out of my closet please give him a visit. Can you say "eye candy WITH an education" BIG time! You'll leave Richards having learned something new each time you visit! *winks* Anyhoo turn slightly to the left and get a close up view of my wonderful new/old screen! Isn't it pretty AND frenchy?! I'm loving it Richard! Thank you!! I stole the LV from the bedroom so I could pretend I was going on a fabulous trip to Paris *winks* (If I sold it I actually COULD go on a fabulous trip to Paris! LOL!!) And to be honest because my poor closet can use all the "bling factor" it can get. *winks* The Dior shoes are just for looking pretty too because they absolutely kill my feet!! And after what I paid for them they need to be good for something! Haha!
Such a pretty and ornate top... Just the way I like em!
And since we're talking about Richard here, check out this vision of loveliness! I won this pillow from Richard's blog giveaway. No wonder I love that man huh? *winks* It's one of the most gorgeous pillows I've ever seen!! 1920's pale yellow silk with french lace appliques and ribbon roses surrounded by marabou! *swoons* French flavor for sure don'tcha think?
It came to me looking like this. Even Richards wrapping is beautiful!
This is another of the french elements that I love having in here. This beautiful wedding cake chandelier came all the way from France via Leeann's blog Fabulously French. She has some lovely french treasures in her store. This beauty was only $200 with shipping. I think that was quite a steal! The pheasants on top of the armoire agree, they can't take their eyes off of it... Literally! Lol! *winks* Merci Leeann!
Now turning toward the armoire I'll open up the doors (If you can take a step back?) and I'll share a few new (and not so new) things with you.
This sweet French girl bust came from my shabby bedroom. I ran out of space in the armoire there, so I glammed her up a bit and placed her in here with some of my favorite hats. Which by the way I wear frequently. I wish we'd go back to wearing hats. I think they add so much personality!... And hide bad hair days... Not that I ever have any of those... Just sayin' *winks*
This beautiful french maiden lamp contributes to the french flavor and adds some much needed light.
Going down a shelf I found this little chubby cherub clock at a local antique store.
I also found a couple of new boudoir dolls to add to my collection. The pretty lady on the left broke her neck in shipping and the seller refunded my money so she was FREE!! I put a pretty ribbon splint on her neck and she's good to go!
She loves the Viktor & Rolfe Flower Bomb perfume and so do I! *winks*
And a new Marie Antoinette doll who appears to be checking out a portrait of herself *winks*
Isn't she exquisite in her tattered blue silk?! She's my new favorite!
These lovely roses came in the package from Richard and the little cherubs in the background also came from his store... Good stuff I tell ya!
To the right of the dolls is this precious little jewel casket that I found at my new friend Peg's shop Maison De Wine And Wienies. It's my newest favorite online shop! Really good prices! I've purchased quite a few things from her now and I can tell you that she's lovely to deal with! The large cherub tray that the ladies are sitting on also came from Peg's store.
You've heard of the "bluebird of happiness? Well this is the silver glitter bird of bliss! Because things that sparkle make me blissful! Ha ha!
In the "found at the Goodwill category" (So I can Join Kathleen's party at Charm Bracelet Diva *winks*) is this Italian majolica pottery vase featuring beautiful dancing ladies on three sides for $6.99.
This vintage carpet is also a $15 Goodwill find from awhile back.
What's that you say? You're" getting claustrophobic and need to get out!"... Errr... oops!... Oh my!... I'm trying to move aside... really I am!... but it's a little crowded... Didn't mean to pinch that!... well maybe I did *winks*
The cherub twins on the shelf say "goodbye!" Thanks for stopping by my closet! Hope you didn't get any bruises? I hope you'll come back next week when Flea Market Finds returns. Please leave me a comment and I'll do the same. I LOVE to hear from you! Vanna

You know you're always and forever a Prairie Boy when the thought of digging into a bowl of crispy coleslaw makes your mouth water.
The other night me and The Mom decided to go out for a weeknight supper -- we just didn't know where. As we drove south down Albert Street we stumbled upon Brewsters Brewpub and Restaurant. "Hey, I haven't been to Brewsters in ages," I said. Neither had The Mom.
So Brewsters it was.
Started in 1989 by Regina's Lanigan family, Brewsters has blossomed into a chain of thirteen restaurants in Regina, Edmonton, and Calgary -- with a fourteenth coming soon.
Now, the purpose of this blog is not normally to explore chain restaurants far and wide. That being said, I don't know of any other Regina-based restaurant that has done as good of a job at expanding its presence as Brewsters has. So, a little credit is due.
One of the interesting things about the chain is that each of the Regina locations is slightly different. The north-end location, next to the Galaxy movie theatre, is mainly a big pub with a compact dining room. Down in the south end, Brewsters truly feels like a dining room with dim lighting, plenty of seating, and several cozy sections. Then the east-end location feels like a slightly rundown blast from the past, although I haven't been in awhile and that might have changed.
Brewsters also has nightly food and drink specials. Some of them, like Thursday night's Riblicious special, are just too good to pass up.
Riblicious comes with a sizeable plate of ribs prepared three different ways and a side bowl of coleslaw. Ahh, coleslaw, you had me the moment I read your sweet name on the menu.
Now brace yourself, the best part is yet to come. The afore-mentioned Riblicious special comes to a grand tally of... just... $11. Sweet jeebus, why haven't I been dining at Brewsters more often?
I can't sign off without mentioning Brewsters extensive list of handcrafted ales and lagers. From the medium-bodied light golden Original Lager to the more adventurous Farmer's Tan White Ale, there's plenty to choose from. And it seems to me that the list has grown a lot in the last couple of years. Next time I visit I'm going to take a stab at a glass of Blue Monk Barley Wine. At 9.9 per cent alcohol, this heavy hitter might just serve as a meal.
My only suggestion to Brewsters on the beer front is to come up with one that truly honours its hometown. How about some Pile O' Bones Pilsner? Or maybe a cold frothy mug of Queen City Wheat Ale? Such a tribute would only be fitting, after all.
Cost - $12 lunch/$25 supper Monday to Friday, lunch and supper/Saturday and Sunday morning brunch, supper until late
2228 Albert St., Regina, SK. Phone: 306-546-3660 _______________ There are plenty of reasons why La Bodega is one of Regina's best restaurants.
OK, I guess you want me to name them. So here goes:
1.) La Bodega took an old, forgotten, decrepit house in the Cathedral neighbourhood and turned it into a hip, vibrant, intimate restaurant. That's not just luck, it's good planning. Previous owners of the building launched a bakery in the same spot and it was a massive flop within a year.
2.) So why has La Bodega succeeded? I think there are three key ingredients: a smart menu, a great location, and a design that allows La Bodega to be a restaurant, lounge, and/or concert venue depending on the time of day and the day of the week. They say you can't be all things to all people, but somehow La Bodega has always managed to attract the cool kids and the business lunch crowd and middle-aged couples just looking for a nice meal. That's no easy feat.
3.) Food -- of course, La Bodega would be nothing without the food. When La Bodega opened almost 10 years ago, no one in Regina had ever heard of tapas. Executive chef and owner Adam Sperling brought a creative, exciting menu to the Queen City and presented it in a way that was fresh and interesting to diners. Most people fell in love with the place after just one visit. And even now, the chefs continue to change and improve upon their menu, revealing new versions of it several times per year, keeping old favourites and introducing new ventures. And if a menu item doesn't work, La Bodega gets rid of it. 4.) Unless you're at Smitty's or an unapologetic hole-in-the-wall, a restaurant's decor is almost as important as what's on the plate (I said almost). La Bodega has always got the decor part right by using a mix of sophisticated yet rustic furnishings. The plain and sometimes mismatched wooden tables and chairs are jazzed up by much-more daring artwork and colours on the walls. The music -- never radio and certainly not Top 40 -- captures the worldly nature of the place without coming off as fake or, worse, New-Agey. In short, La Bodega's gypsy chic style is the Cathedral neighbourhood in a nutshell. It fits into its surroundings naturally. What more could you ask for? 5.) OK, this last reason is half-serious and half a joke. But when La Bodega first opened, they sold alcohol at ridiculously cheap prices. The food was never undervalued, but the drinks sure were. And people loved it. So they stayed for another. And another. And hey, can we see that menu again? We're hungry now. Over the years, it seems the prices of booze have crept upward, but you can still get a decent glass of wine for $5-6 per glass. So, what's the downside? La Bodega's biggest weakness is its weekend brunch. The menu is nowhere near as tasty as what's on offer for weekday lunch or suppertime. And the prices for an Eggs Benny border on the obscene. To me, the best breakfasts in the world are cheap and dirty. Get in, drink your weight in coffee, and get out $8 later. Otherwise La Bodega, you rock. http://www.labodegaregina.ca/

We Moms are a varied bunch, but we all have one thing in common: we have children to raise. Children, given to us from the hand of God, to raise for His honor and glory. Motherhood can be overwhelming (for me, anyway). Our boys, how do we raise them to be real men in a world that confuses chivalry with chauvinism? And our daughters, is preparing them to be homemakers setting them up for disappointment? Breast or bottle? What if you can't breastfeed? Cloth or disposables? Work from home, away from home, or not at all? Homeschool, private school, or public school? Birth control or Quiverfull? So many questions. So many decisions. So little time; that's why we wrote The Pursuit of Motherhood. The goal of The Pursuit of Motherhood is to sift through the sideline issues and encourage Moms in every situation to pursue mothering their children with all their heart, keeping God at the center of all their endeavors. "The aged women likewise, that they be in behavior as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; that they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, to be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed." Titus 2:3-5 (emphasis mine) The Pursuit of Motherhood is authored by 17 Moms including Kelly Crawford from Generation Cedar, June Fuentes from A Wise Woman, Jacqueline Franks from Deep Roots At Home, Melanie Young from Raising Real Men, and yours truly. We share in common a love for the Lord and a love for our families, however imperfect. We sincerely desire the same for you and pray that this eBook will give you an uncommon vision for motherhood an the tools to restore its glory within your own home.

Please keep reading and you'll see what I've got saved for ya OK? *winks* I think this one is pretty good... just sayin' Anyway the "dream piece" I'm all excited to share has been on my list of "wants" for what feels like forevah! I've been going by a local antique mall and admiring it for over a year hoping the dealer would have a BIG sale. Alas they never did. Well... this last week I dropped by again to say hello and gently fondle *winks* the "dream piece" and the seller happened to be there. I told him how much I admired it and asked him if he could do any better on the price? He came down $50 (I wanted to cry) It wasn't nearly a big enough discount for my wallet. Then he started to tell me about its history... How he'd purchased it back in 1970 for what he was currently asking... How it had a double thick marble top that didn't slide... And telling me that as he'd housed it for 40+ yrs he'd like to at least break even.. etc etc... I told him I thought it was actually not too bad a price because I'd seen other sellers ask thousands, I just wasn't able to go that high. So he told me if I really wanted it and I was willing to buy it today, he'd take off $400... Seriously from $50 to $400?... I still wanted to cry, but now tears of joy! What is all this emotion about? (You might be asking) And also "when is she gonna show the %($@ picture already!" Well here IT is! It's a 19th century French patisserie table! Now mine mine mine! I'm happy dancing like nobodys business!! I've been trying for days to take a pretty picture of it in some great light to do it justice, but it's been nothing but gloom and doom for the last two, so I'm going ahead and embracing the darkness *winks* Isn't it fabulous!? Do you see the frenchy beverage dispenser? That was a $19.99 find at the Value Village and the etched glasses were Goodwill finds for $2.99 each (I found 11) The silver tray was one of last weeks finds.
At this point I was thinking my week... Actually my year... couldn't get any better! When I spotted these two cuties at a local junk/antique store. I instantly fell in love with them although they were pretty costy and more than a little chipped and damaged. I was told by the seller that they're early 19th century Vieux Paris porcelain? Seems about right to me... Maybe one of my experts could verify? (That's you Richard *winks*)
I just love her sweet face!
And her basket of chippy roses.
The gentleman is supposed to be a gardener, but his shovel is gone, as is the handle and spout to his watering can...
And his head was badly glued on at one time. However for almost 200 yrs old they're looking pretty good don'tcha think? Just check out those dandy trousers *winks*
I scored a couple of cool frenchy grainsack style pillows from WUSLU. They're nice and large and were very reasonably priced. This was my second purchase there and I've been quite pleased. Have any of you purchased from them?..I like that shipping is always only $5... Oh and that I could order from the comfort of home in my jammies *winks*
Unfortunately these ones are sold out, but they do relist items from time to time when stock allows.
And for my final giveaway (At least till I reach 500 friends *winks*) I'm offering this Rosenthal Versace Medusa wine stopper. New in box. Just leave me a comment telling me you would like it to be yours.
It's burnt orange in color if you can't tell.
Even if you're not interested in the giveaway I'd still love to hear from YOU! What would be a dream piece for you? And are you still doing the Happy Dance after finding one? (I still am!) I'd love to hear all about it! Vanna I'm joining those two sweet girls Patti and Paula at Ivy & Elephants for:
It's time once again for Flea Market Finds!! WHOOT WHOOT!! OK now that I've made some noise over pretty much nothing *winks* I have to say that the amazing finds were not to be found (by me) last week... but... I did find some pretty good scores IMHO. Those of y'all who've read my blog a little, know how much I LOVE LOVE LOVE busts!! I have a collection of marble ladies that I adore, and my madness for busts has worn off on some of my fellow blogging buddies. Weeeeellllll... they found themselves some wonderful frenchy girl busts and had me feeling a little green with envy! Like my friend Chari at Happy To Design HERE And my dear friend Gloria at Happy To Be HERE. So I was tickled PINK when I found this sweet french girl bust from a local antique store for $28!
Speaking of PINK... I liked her so much that I felt my french armoire in my shabby guestroom could use a little revamp, so I added some pink vintage barkcloth curtains on a tension rod and hung them in the background. Here's the before with a mirrored background. You can just spy a reflection of the bed.
And here's the after
Not earth shattering to be sure. Pretty much the same stuff (with the addition of the new bust and one other cute little thang...
This darling vintage mannequin hand that I found for $11 at the Vintage Nest. I've been having all sorts of fun putting different jewelry and objects on it! It makes a perfect display from my minerva medallion. Here's a close up on the middle shelf.
And the top.
What do you think? Is it an improvement at all? The jury is still out for me, but I was too tired to redo the whole thing again so I'm gonna live with it and see how I feel about it later. *winks* I also found this 1920's lace and silk dresser scarf for $8 and I'm currently using it on a vanity seat in my bedroom. Isn't it pretty?
Here's a shot of the entire gentlemens vanity.
I also found a set of taxidermy pheasants for $65 at a favorite antique store. They'll be flying to my hubbs man cave office *winks* but it was too dark in there for photos today. I loves me my taxidermy birds! You can see my post on my newest peacock HERE if you missed it.
And funny how when it rains it pours? I found this little faux pheasant at the Value Village for $1.99. Do you find yourself buying in groups of things? For some reason it seems to happen to me often. Now if I could only stumble upon a cache of 18th century french chairs for cheaps! *winks*
And my last find this vintage rose tablecloth from the Value Village for $1.49. It has some stains that I couldn't manage to remove, but that's OK, It'll make it easier to use, and I won't mind if somebody spills their red wine *winks*
Thanks for stopping by! I hope you'll leave me a comment and come back next week for more flea market finds. Vanna I'm joining my friend Courtney at French Country Cottage for:

Bonjour beautiful peeps!! It time once again for...
FLEA... MARKET... FINDS!! Where I like to pretend that I found some great deal at a flea market (Delusional remember?... ) *winks* but probably more often than not payed too much at an antique or thrift store lol! Anyhoo as usual I'm starting with my favorite find for the week and that would be yet another French globe de mariee... Are you tired of those yet? I sure hope not because I have couple more beauties to share with you *winks* This one comes via ebay and it's a little different from the other globes I've shared. The shape is quite different and it has beautiful bronze details. I've been having fun decorating the interior with different little bits found around the house. Here I've placed a french cherub inkwell with some pearls and a rose. I'm in love with it!!
Close up. Sorry about the glare there just wasn't any way around it.
This is what it looks like empty. I think originally perhaps it would've had one of the display chairs that are found in my other domes?
But all that empty space is great for display!! Here I've tried out a few of my figurines featuring sheep.
And do you see the rug in the background? it's an antique french aubusson in really rough shape, but for $30 at a local estate sale I couldn't say no *winks*
This Victorian bead work footstool was a find from my trip last week with my friend Joyce. I'll be selling it in my enabler boutique.
I love the paisley bead work!
This frenchy jardiniere was another Centralia find. I'm thinking about painting it gray? What do you think?
This little bronze basket of enamel flowers was $3.99 at the local Value Village. I thought it was a little expensive, but there was something kinda cool about it... Well I found an almost identical one on ebay for $99! Whoo hoo!! An actual good deal! I just love when that happens! *winks*
And I had to add another boudoir doll to the collection. This french doll with her little bitter pill expression spoke to me *winks* (She probably said "Take me home you crazy American lady!") I felt kinda sorry for her. Doesn't she look like she's having a bad day? Lol! The sweet little kewpie doll was a find at Maison de Wine and Wienies for $14.
A shot with the shabby girls.
This 1920's boudoir doll head was $8. I think she originally would've been on a pillow.
And this charming large shabby frenchy statue of two children was a local antique mall find for $12. The roses are the last of the poor waterlogged flowers in my yard. The lace tablecloth in the background was a $4.99 find at the Goodwill. It has stains and some holes but it also has tons of filet lace featuring one of my favorite things...
Peacocks!!
This set of ballerina boudoir lamps are pretty for $65, but I really purchased them for their lovely flower shades
I have plans for these babies!
And lastly a cherub lamp from the Goodwill for 99 cents. I need to fill in some chips and paint it, but I think it's a project even I can tackle *winks* Wish me luck!
Thanks for stopping by! I hope you'll come back next week for more flea market finds. I'll be sharing my finished lamp. I hope you'll leave me a comment and I'll do the same. As always I LOVE to hear from you!! Vanna I'm joining Sherry at No Minimalist Here for:
My hubbs took me out for some Valentines shopping this year. He knows how to make me happy! It's been a little while since I've been able to get oot-n-aboot lol! And I thought I'd share my little adventure with y'all!
I had to start with a stop at one of my favorite sellers in one of my local antique malls. She always has such an interesting way of putting things together. Very textural... and well... ODD.
You can click to enlarge the pics if you want
It's really difficult to see, I know, but there's a little taxidermy bird under the cloche wearing a little gold crown!
My hand reached for it straight away... only to discover that it wasn't for sale! Dont'cha just hate when sellers do that?! And why do I always want (and seem to find) the only items that they DON'T want to sell?!!
Anyhoo doesn't this vignette just draw you in? Makes me want to buy one of everything! Course I feel that way a lot! Lol!
I also loved these stacked platforms, but why oh why are they soooo expensive? At $95 and $115 respectively.
And this display in the same booth makes me long for a simple french lunch of baguettes fresh butter and of course wine! How about you?
Isn't this old stove top interesting? It would make for some interesting yard art me thinks. But at $125 it's a bit pricey.
Y'all know I'm an odd duck. So what better Valentines gift than an ODD DUCK!! And look it's a delusional duck that thinks it's royal!... PERFECT!
He sure is ducky! And busy urn-ing a living! Lol! Hmmmm but again at $136 he's still a bit over budget... Durn it!
Maybe some cool giant concrete finials would be just the thing? I always love those. And at $32 and $28 I think I'm going to keep them on the short list...
But wait... what do I spy out of the corner of my eye? It's a victorian mirrored firescreen with hand painted flowers. It's $125 BUT there's 20% off. So a cool $100. More tempting for sure! But unfortunately I don't need another firescreen. Maybe I need to start looking for neato small things... yep that's the ticket!
So moving on to the next mall for smalls, I spotted this booth. And looky 15% off. Is your eye drawn to anything here? Can you guess knowing me as well as y'all do *winks* what I might be drawn to?
Did you guess this? I've been so drawn to these wonderful old pincushion ladies lately! And with the discount she's $23.80. She's not too large... I'm sure I could find room for her at my house... But my cousin D has a really similar one that she paid only $12 for. Do you ever find yourself saying no to something because you know someone else found one for less? So I'm probably gonna regret this but I'm walking away.
Then as I turned I spotted this. Hmmm couldn't this sweet little ladies frenchy style desk be a diamond in the rough?
Can't you see it painted in cream with a luscious toile behind the chicken wire? And at slightly less than $120 with discount I might just have to go back for this little cutie! Maybe my hubby will FINALLY let me paint something! Lol!
Ok so what did I finally take home, you might ask? Or you might be so tired from eyestrain that you don't care... But I'm gonna show you anyway!! *winks*
I took home this interesting little frenchy spelter girl thingy. I have no idea what she was once used for. Do you? Maybe an oil lamp base? Whatever the case may be, she works great as a candleholder or another home for one of my beloved moss balls *winks*
And I couldn't pass these up! Art nouveau bliss! Next week I'll be doing a giveaway for one of these cuties so please come back and see me!
Cherubs turned out to be my theme for the day. I found this sweet cherub compote/tazza at the Goodwill. My friend Chari from Happy To Design here has the most darling candelabra with this same cherub. So I'm thinkin' maybe I can make one too?
And just look at this cute little fella! He's working so hard on sharing good luck! Well I can NEVER have too much of that! So he HAD to come home with me!
I also spotted these pretty Dresden style candlesticks and my heart skipped a beat! They have the most beautiful pale mauvey pink roses! I'm addicted to roses... can you tell? Lol!
I also found two rolls of this cherub wallpaper. It reminds me of my dear friend Gloria/ Happy To Be's stairwell. It's featured in her pink Saturday post for Friday, November 21, 2008 here Isn't it gorgeous?!! And anytime I find anything that Gloria has... I'm doing GOOD!! She has the most fabulous antiques and taste!
I also brought home this victorian ewer. I loved the intricate metal work and time worn patina. Maybe I could send it to Jo-Ann Coletti and have her paint some of her beautiful roses on it? Doesn't she do beautiful work? here
Also at the Goodwill I found these two vintage petticoats as well as the champagne pink roses and queen anns lace. I love soft romantic ruffles!
And I thought this was such a cute find! (Also at the Goodwill) for $1.99! Some vintage embroidery that some talented person made into a pillow.
Even the back is darling!
And here it is in its new home in my shabby chic bedroom.
This old fence piece would make a great door topper. Maybe painted white? It was only $2.
And I found an ugly ole lamp with a very cool marble base (IMHO) I took the lamp apart to use the base as a platform for something special...
Maybe a french candelabra?
Naw.. I think I found the perfect piece! This little cherub compote looks just right!
And when I came home from my shopping adventure I found this little cutie waiting for me on my front porch from ebay.
As well as this darling set of 1920's/30's chalkware figures.
Well I hope you enjoyed my little shopping adventure. I'm very happy with my sweet finds. I couldn't love my Valentines gifts more if I picked em out myself! Hahaha!! *winks* Vanna
A few years ago I joined the site Rate My Space. There I shared many of the rooms in my home and met so many wonderful people! The other day I decided to take a trip down memory lane and read some of the lovely comments that had been left over the years, only to find that all my spaces had been deleted! I had the various spaces linked on my sidebar. Alas never to be found again. *sighs* Soooo I'll be sharing my rooms here on my blog starting with my Shabby guestroom. It's encountered quite a few changes since the RMS days. Hopefully for the better? This could take a wee while so you might want to get yourself a nice cup of tea or coffee... or even better wine *winks* and settle in for LOTS of pictures! I'll be moving clockwise around the room so come on and follow me and I'll show ya around! *winks* This is the room overview...
Large white antique mirror for pretty primping...
This is the newest addition to my shabby room, a chippy old wicker bed corona (found last week at a yard sale for $10) I wanted to use this as a shelf for displaying some rose paintings. However it just wasn't strong enough so I had to make do for this photo-op *winks* Whatcha think? fine or flop?
Close up.
This french floral sconce sits at the top of the mirror. I love its delicate beauty.
My lovely Marie dress form. One of my favorite things in the room!
French armoire...
Filled with all kinds of linens and treasures...
Come a little closer and take a peeky poo...
A favorite little french lamp.
The lady in green is the newest addition to my boudoir lady lamp collection.
Isn't she sweet?!
In the corner lies a victorian tete a tete chaise that I won at an auction. Fell in LOVE! Had to have it! Despite its shabby condition *winks*
A little pause for a spot of tea...
Italian stacking tables in cream with dreamy florals...
And above is a shelf filled with my small Norah Wellings doll collection.
The little brown pixie is one of my favorites!
Who can resist a smile like this???! Their little faces make me happy each and every time I see them!
A shabby chippy garden goddess adorned with rosaries and rhinestones...
A vanity found at the local Goodwill.
This little celluloid box featuring a courting couple still has its original interior brush set on a bed of blue silk.
Above hangs a bronze cherub lamp...
Frenchy bedside table.
Bed corona.
Darling ballet pointe shoes... One pair signed... Against a background of vintage roses... I want more!!
Can you tell I LOVE roses?! *winks* Naw... to subtle for ya? LOL!
I wish I could've gotten a better shot of this 19th century Vinea hand colored aquatint, but the glass was too reflective so hopefully you'll get the gist?
It has lots of cavorting cherubs which I adore!!
A little shelf filled with some more of my boudoir ladies.
And we've come all the way around. I hope you enjoyed the tour of my shabby bedroom. It's my one room for over the top femininity! Have to consider the poor hubby in the rest of the house! *winks* So if you're a girl who loves things French foofy and poofy? You're welcome to come stay for a visit. I'd love to have you! Sorry boys I just couldn't do this to you! *winks* You might come away with tassels on your ears! LOL!
And as you leave the room this pretty french couple is waving goodbye! And wishing you a wonderful day! Please leave me a comment and I'll do the same. And come back for a visit anytime! Vanna
Bonjour my fabulous friends!! Welcome to the 48th week of Flea Market Finds! Sheesh I can't believe I've been doing these posts for almost a year... How time flies when you're having fun huh? *winks* I'm continuing with my half off treasures from the Goodwill from last week... But first (As usual I'm running late) let me announce the winner of the Versace wine stopper... Drum roll... It's... PAULA of the wonderful blog Ivy and Elephants! Email me with your shipping addy Paula. OK moving on to my various kibbles and bits finds.... Well that's what it seems like anyway after last weeks haul-o-ramma *winks* I have a favorite, but just by a skosh. It's this 1920's lamp (I found at a favorite local antique store) featuring an 18th century couple. I like to think they're Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI *winks* Unfortunately it has a good sized crack in the center post... A chunk actually... (the only reason I could afford it) so I did what any lamp lover without any money or DIY skills would do... I slapped a ribbon on it! looks pretty good too if I do say so *winks*
Look at that sky high hair! Isn't it fab?! There's even a little feather on top. I have no idea who the maker is? It's numbered but no makers mark. So if you happen to know? Give me a shout out K? It's pretty distinctive in style, almost a little lladro-esque?
Even the feet are sweet!
And yet another frenchy figure! This one from my favorite etsy seller Cindy at Edith & Evelyn... And yes another Marie Antoinette. If you haven't already guessed I'm gaga for Marie! You can see just how crazy HERE... Sure it could be any other lady of the 18th century, but to me they're all Marie! *winks*
She has such lovely details.
This cross was a $2.50 find from last week at the Goodwill.
I'm also loving this new to me (but very old) set of books that I purchased from my new friend Stacey of Flotsam & Jetsam. They're 18th century and loaded with worn leather yumminess! Here they're topping the pile of some of my other leather books from the 19th century. I can't resist a beautiful old leather bound book, can you?
Titled "Pindar's Works" Peter Pindar was the pseudonym of John Wolcott. A physician turned poet who liked to poke fun at the royals of the day. Aren't they wonderful!? There are 4 books to the full set so I'll probably have many happy years of searching for the missing two. *winks*
This condiment set was also a Goodwill find for $5.50. It was missing a couple of its jars, but I thought it would make a good caddy for perfume.
I really like the little roman head reliefs. To polish or not? That is still the question...
I also found a bunch of pearl necklaces at the Goodwill for between $1-$3. Can't get too many of those for draping on all the statues around here *winks* The little cherub head was 50 cents at the Goodwill. The pink roses are made of feathers and were on a wreath that I purchased for $2 at the GW. I pulled them off to use for other projects.... Doesn't that sound all "DIY" professional? Most likely they'll just sit in the craft closet with all the other bits and bobs that I've never used *sighs* as I am a DIY wannabe *winks*
The pale blue English cup and saucer set was a $4.99 find at the local Value Village.
The little tray underneath was a $20 find on etsy. It has antique lace sandwiched between two pieces of glass.
And this antique sepia print of Mary came from the same antique store as the favorite lamp for $5.
That baby Jesus sure is glowing! *winks*
You might have noticed the blue fabric in the background of some of my shots? It's a large panel of 1940's barkcloth I found for $3.99 at the Value Village. It's still very bright and vibrant, and must have spent many years in someone's hope chest.
The two little domes below were $1 each at the Goodwill. I painted the bases white. And I've also added a new boudoir lady bust to my collection. She's a nice large one, and came with hands that I need to attach... OK truthfully that my poor husband will have to figure out how to attach. *winks*
Without the glass so you can see her.
And finally this little Dresden-esque flower watering pot was $1.99 at the VV.
Thanks for stopping by! That's all I have for this week. I hope you'll come back next week for more Flea Market Finds. Did you score some treasures this last week? Please come get me. I'd love to see them! And please leave me a comment letting me know you stopped by and I'll do the same. I LOVE to hear from you! Vanna I'm joining my friend Sherry at No Minimalist Here for:

I'm joining my friend Chari at Happy To Design once again for Sunday Favorites. This post is from Feb of 2009. I hope you enjoy revisiting this shopping trip with me.

One bite of this flavor-packed salad and you'll understand why Goodness Me cooking instructor Sandy Pomeroy named it Sensational Salad! A plate or two of this, and you're well on your way to 5-10 servings of vegetables per day. I've tweaked the recipe to suit our taste, but the original came from her.
Sensational Salad
4 cups organic salad mix (choose one with lots of different leaf varieties)
1 cup cauliflower florets, finely chopped
1/2 cucumber, quartered horizontally, then chopped
1/2 red pepper, finely chopped
1/4 cup green onions, finely chopped
1/2 carrot, grated
1 cup kale, finely chopped
1/2 cup mushrooms, finely chopped
1 cup raw pumpkin seeds
1 cup dried cranberries
Mix together in a large bowl. Serve with salad dressing (recipe below) to taste. Dressing:
1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil
1/4 cup flax oil
1 tsp. Herbamare
1/4 cup red wine vinegar
1 clove garlice, finely chopped
Mix together and store in a sealed jar. Shake before using. Refrigerate unused portion. If you love whole food recipes, you'll love the Cottage Mama's eBooks written by Kristy Howard.
